Viewership results of Fortnite World Cup 2019

Posted Jul 30, 2019

Despite the fact that Fortnite remains one of the most popular esports disciplines for quite a while, it was only this year that it received its very own World Cup. We analyzed the results of the competition and today we will share them with you in this article.

First of all, it should be noted that actually there's nothing for the Fortnite World Cup to be compared to. For this discipline, this is the first full-fledged World Cup with the world's best players. Previously, fans of this game have only ever seen weekly tournaments or show events – like Fortnite Celebrity Pro-Am. We will use the latter as the FWC counterpart in today's news.

Overall, the championship received a pretty good amount of attention. The event's average viewers reached 1 million 149 thousand people. The event's peak viewers reached a total of 2,334 thousand. Considering the other achievements of this discipline, this is a worthy result.

A separate mention goes to the platforms of the competition, which was broadcasted over five services at once. Most of the attention was directed towards Twitch and YouTube Live. Dominating much of the competition was the Amazon platform. But when it came to the final day with the single format, the first spot was taken by YouTube more than once.

Twitch became the definite winner of this particular fight. Its peak viewers reached 1 million 219 thousand people, while the average viewers reached 609 thousand people. On the other hand, YouTube took the second spot with a rather small gap. Google's platform reached 1 million 162 thousand peak viewers and 513 thousand average viewers.

When comparing the year's main tournament of the battle royale with the last year's Fortnite Celebrity Pro-Am, several interesting points can be noticed. The tournament for stars and gamers seems to lag just a bit behind this season's World Cup. At the very least, this means that the hype surrounding the game does not decrease – on the contrary, it is preserved even when no longer supported by the participation of popular singers or other such public personalities.

At the same time, if we contrast FWC with other disciplines, then a completely different picture can be observed. This time we will use the League of Legends' Worlds and Dota 2's The International as the tournament's counterparts. The results of these competitions are taken from the events of the 2018 season.

The Dota 2's main tournament of the year can not compete with the Epic Games' Battle Royale. At the same time, the League of Legends' 2018 World Championship is almost at the same level. But please note that Worlds has the benefit of the long-time audience that has been attracted to the game over the course of many years. On the other hand, Fortnite took over the world in just two years.

But it is worth noting the fact that, unlike the Fortnite World Cup, these two championships lasted a long time. Therefore, comparing these by the average viewers would not be very objective. Both the Worlds and TI had group stages that are not very interesting for the average fan. At FWC, the battles became “heated” right from the start, and therefore each match had the weight equal to that of the playoff meetings of other major tournaments.

As a result, it can be stated with confidence that the World Cup has managed to prove Fortnite's position in the field of esports to the whole planet. Yes, the organizers had a number of problems that they could not cope with at a sufficient level, but we hope that in the future such incidents will be solved, this time on a professional level.
