LoL Worlds 2020: Viewer’s Guide

In September, the best teams of the planet continue their way to the main trophy - Summoner's Cup. We’ve gathered all handy info about League of Legends World Championship 2020. If you want to know more about the main tournament LoL tournament of the year, then our article is right for you.

How and when will LoL Worlds take place?

This year's World Championship will take place from September 25 to October 31 and include two stages: Play-in and Main Event. 22 teams from 11 regions will participate in it. Only Vietnamese organizations had to miss the main tournament of the year because they couldn't get to the venue.

Play-In: September 25 - 30

The first stage of LoL Worlds 2020 will be divided into two parts. Six teams will be placed into two groups with BO1 matches. The winner of each group will get a spot in the regular stage of the championship. The teams who got 2-4th places will enter the Play-In's playoffs, and after that, the two best teams participate in the Main Event.

The match between MAD Lions and INTZ Esports will be a kick-off of the first stage on September 25 at 10:00 CEST. Moreover, we'll see the first battle of EU vs. NA: Team Liquid and MAD Lions will fight each other at 14:00.

Main Event: October 3 - 31

The 16 best teams of the world will be divided into 4 groups. The format of the matches will be again BO1. The two most powerful squads of each quartet will fight for the victory in a Single-Elimination bracket with the BO5 series. The most prominent player from ex-Wild Card regions will receive a spot at the Worlds 2021.

The match of FlyQuest and Top Esports will open the Worlds Main stage. Their match will begin at 10:00 CEST. Our favorite battle between America and Europe will occur at 15:00, but the regions will be presented by TSM and Fnatic, the western scene's legends.

Where to watch?

You can watch the event on all popular streaming platforms. Twitch and YouTube will be the most important for Western viewers, but there's also something for Asia.

Also, there will be additional content on YouTube channels. It can be both the recorded teamspeaks and interesting analysis from Riot Games analysts or commentators.

Brief digression

Using the official hashtag #Worlds2020, you can find much content by fans, official team pages, and regional championships.

In case you missed, Riot Games just recently released the official LoL World Championship 2020 anthem. It was created during the special “music camp” of the studio.

If you are waiting for the opening ceremony, then be sure to jog your memory and remember what the organizers prepared that year. Considering the words of the studio workers, the 10th World Championship is going to be something incredible.

Who to follow?

It’s not a secret that it’s hard to choose whom to follow out of 22 teams. Especially, when, T1, the legends of the discipline, won’t participate in the championship. We will help you not miss an entertaining fight or at least not get bored while waiting for your favorite team's match. We'll share our expectations for 2 stages.

Among Play-In teams, we really expect something incredible from the CIS representative, and we're looking forward to the success of Team Liquid.

The guys from the CIS somehow showed everyone their hidden strength. During LoL Worlds 2016, ANX players passed the Wild-Card and advanced from the "Group of Death" to the playoffs. Although they were defeated, this result can be called the most successful in the history of the Minor regions.

This year, players from Unicorns Of Love can repeat this fate because they have the strongest roster in the region. Even the G2 Esports jungler, Marcin "Jankos" Jankowski, would not like to see AHAHACiK (UoL jungler) and others in his group.

Team Liquid has a radically different situation. North America each year shows worse performance at the Worlds. This year the region has a chance to set a new anti-record.

If Liquid cannot pass the qualifiers, then the LCS invites to the next World Championship will be a big question. That’s why their matches will be watched at least by all NA fans, not mentioning the enormous fan-base around the world.

We can't say a lot about the Main Event, so we'll present only key highlights.

The fans of "20 minutes without kills" game style should pay attention to groups B and D with China and Korea's best teams.

These regions play as safe as possible, but each viewer can be surprised by the players' incredible level and how equal their skills are when they start to fight.

We can’t but mention the main LoL Worlds favorite - G2 Esports. The group stage will not cause problems for the team. Unless, of course, Jankos' fear of UoL comes true.

We can’t say the same about European team Fnatic. Rekkles and others will meet with Gen.G and TSM. Although they cannot call themselves the strongest in the world, they are still fearsome opponents.

Group C can become the most popular without much effort, thanks to the fans of SoloMid and Fnatic. After all, don't you forget about the “EU vs NA” holy war?

Waiting for the record?

Last year we saw a new record in the history of esports events. The LoL Worlds 2019 semi-finals peaked at nearly 4 million viewers, and Koreans concluded the biggest part of that number. Fans are waiting for this year's World Championship mostly because of the new record possibility.

But because T1 didn't enter the tournament, such a record probability has significantly reduced. At the same time, Korean viewers can surprise us again if the team of this region will again reach the finals.
