The most popular tournaments of August

Summer is not the best time for esports, nevertheless August shew us that people want to observe big events and tournaments. Let's consider what happened in the last month.

LPL Summer is exclusively the Chinese League of Legends tournament. Playoffs started in August, it has gathered a huge number of viewers from the Middle Kingdom. The successful performance of Chinese teams at The International 2017 was a surprise for many people, but this contributed to the popularity of the tournament in China. The main "surprise" of August is the first ever PlayerUnknown's Battleground tournament — Gamescom PUBG Invitational. The game is extremely popular in China, thus it has gathered a large audience. However, we still don’t know the future of PUBG esports and will this game gather so huge audience further.

The month of Dota 2 — that is how we can call August if we watch statistics without Chinese viewers. The International 2017 gathered a huge Western audience, it has also broken the records of previous years. However, the main novelty of the month is the same Gamescom PUBG Invitational. Outside of China, the game still has a huge number of fans. Developers told us that PUBG bought 10.000.000 times, what is insane.

The statistics with the English-speaking audience is not very different from the general western trends: The International 2017 at the top, followed by the Legend of Legends and Gamescom PUBG Invitational tournaments. Surprisingly, only half of the Western viewers of Gamescom PUBG Invitational are english-speaking.

The CIS region is as always on its wave. The most favorite discipline, Dota 2, of course, at the very top, followed by the CS: GO tournaments and the same Gamescom PUBG Invitational. If the grand finale of The International 2017 was between Chinese teams, then the audience would be significantly less, but the successful game of Team Liquid saved the situation. In the PlayerUnknown's Battleground tournament there were Russian-speaking players, and in Squad mode (4x4) the T3 Gaming team even took the second place.

Unconditional King of August Twitch is none other than The International 2017. English-language and Russian-language broadcast took the first two places in popularity. A huge number of spectators from the CIS should not surprise - in this region Dota 2 is like a national sport.
