Last Sunday we saw an impressing final of IEM Katowice 2020, that’s why we can’t but tell you about the tournament’s impact on the history of the discipline and about the record they succeeded to break.
The peak mark of viewership on the streams has reached the point of 1M viewers. In contrast, StarLadder Major Berlin 2019 managed to collect 837K viewers on the final match.
IEM is the first CS:GO tournament that attracted more viewers, than Major by Valve. IEM tournament series has already updated its own record in quarterfinals during the match between Na’Vi and Liquid.
The winners of the tournament are Natus Vincere. They defeated the French team G2 Esports with the score 3:0 and received their first title for 11 months. The previous one they obtained in April, 2019 on StarSeries & i-League Season 7.
Regarding the statistics, we didn’t include IEM Katowice Major 2019 in our comparison, because it's inappropriate to equate Major event with the regular one. That’s why we drew a parallel with IEM Katowice 2018.
The amount of Hours Watched of IEM 2020 has increased on 84%. Besides that, the quantity of viewers on YouTube stream has enhanced in 4 times. In terms of languages, the number of Portuguese viewers has increased on 42%, despite that there were no teams from South America.
The boost of Polish-speaking viewers was obvious and it has totalled 19%. One of the reasons of that was the move of the head of Silesian Voivodeship, with Katowice as capital. He forbid the viewers to attend the event in order to prevent the distribution of coronavirus. So, the organizers were hosting the tournament without the viewers on the arena.
The amount of French-speaking viewers has also increased on 209%, perhaps it's because of the participation of two French teams - G2 Esports and Team Vitality.
Russian streams were on hype, that’s why the mark of 382,369 peak viewers was reached on Maincast stream. It’s important to note, that Maincast has overtaken the official ESL stream. So, it is the new record for Russian CS:GO streams and this is the third record in Russian streaming history. Considering the numbers, more popular than IEM Katowice 2020 are only The International 2019 and The Kiev Major 2017.
Na’Vi became the most popular team by the average viewers category - 392K viewers. The second place is taken by G2 Esports, and Astralis, the winners of IEM Katowice Major 2019, are on the third position. Eventually, matches of Natus Vincere compiled 46% from overall amount of Hours Watched.
Initially, the bookmakers’ favourite in semifinals was team Astralis and bookmakers predicted their victory against Na’Vi with the 2:0 score. But, in reality it was exactly the opposite and the winners of the previous event didn’t make it to the finals. Moreover, Natus Vincere become the most popular teams in both viewing categories and 4 of their matches entered the top of the most popular teams of the tournament.
Overall, IEM Katowice 2020 became the most popular non-major event and Na’Vi turned out to be the real phenomenon of this season. The sniper of Na’Vi team Oleksandr “S1mple” Kostyliev became the MVP of IEM Katowice 2020 and it’s the 10th title of this Ukrainian player.
Despite the absence of viewers, this tournament definitely left its mark in history of CS:GO discipline and had its own impact on everyone, because IEM itself is significant not only for Polish gamers, but for all CS:GO community in general. During the tournament in-game online essentially increased and has surpassed its own record - 924K of players online simultaneously.
