August Twitch analysis

The last month of the summer is mostly the vacation period for many people, that is why the game developers and esports organizers do not actively plan anything in that time. Of course, there are some exceptions. The International is the best proof of this.

August has always been and will be the most important month in Dota 2 esports season. The International 2018 broke all records of online viewers and the total prize fund. The tournament was held only for ten days, nevertheless, it was enough to take a confident third place in the list of the most popular Twitch sections. There will be a significant, but not catastrophic drop of viewers in September as the qualifications of all the upcoming tournaments will start in that period.

World of Warcraft took the fourth place as was expected as the most popular MMORPG in the world received the new add-on Battle for Azeroth. It was the fastest-selling expansion in the history of this game — it proved that World of Warcraft is still very popular. The game will lose some viewers with each months, but together with new patches and new dungeons some of them will return.

IRL dropped a few positions as it couldn’t compete with others with such long-awaited content. PUBG also became less popular among viewers after PUBG Global Invitational as was expected. The same thing can be said about CS:GO — there were no tournaments in August as it is the vacation period for all players.

Monster Hunter World received a PC version in August — it draws public attention to the game, especially in the Western countries. SCUM came out in late August, but it was able to gather some audience because of the unusual gameplay, which combines Battle Royale elements and RPG-survival-sandbox.

Destiny 2 received a new expansion — Solstice of Heroes, it brought back some players. Escape from Tarkov develops rapidly, what even more, developers announces in early August a pleasant discount for all players. It brought new audience to the game.

CD Projekt Red, the developers of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, broadcasted in live on Twitch 48 minutes of gameplay of their new game — Cyberpunk 2077. It had 287.515 viewers at the peak and 210.609 on average — it was enough to take 17 position in our top.
