DreamHack Dallas 2023 — Fortnite, Rocket League improve, CS:GO sees major dip
The DreamHack Dallas 2023 emanated from the Kay Bailey Hutchison Center from June 2 to June 4, featuring tournaments, cosplays, meet-and-greets, and much more. It had competitions in ten disciplines, with the two Rocket League events and Fortnite combining to create some records, although mainstays like CS:GO and Halo saw mixed fortunes.
DreamHack is a gaming-focused convention series that has stops all around the world, with the Dallas wing happening over the first week of the month. As per an organizer, it attracted over 44K people from numerous states and countries, who also got to see a Cosplay Championship and various popular voice actors from video games like Mass Effect and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

One of the bright spots was the newly-added Epic Games offering, which hit 29K Peak Viewers and became one of the most popular competitions throughout the entire series when this Texas city has been the host. Overall, this DreamHack series did 9.91M Hours Watched, with Fortnite accounting for 5.10% of this number. GXR Malibuca and Th0masHD took home the Duos title in the builder-shooter, with the top 10 qualifying for the Gamers8 event later this year which has a prize pool of $2M.
Both Rocket League competitions — DreamHack Dallas Rocket Clash 2023 and Collegiate Rocket League 2023 - World Championship — did some great numbers to become two of the most popular tournaments in the series. The former recorded 12K PV, while the college event notched 41K PV, which is more than even the highly sought-after Fortnite contest.
Among the smaller titles to be held in 2022 and 2023, all of them saw a fall in viewership, with only Super Smash Bros. Melee seeing almost equal totals across both editions. When it comes to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Guilty Gear, they both saw sharp dips, as viewers were seemingly interested in the newer games that were added this time around.
When it comes to the more mainstream events, CS:GO is always at the top of the list, although this year saw the separate male and female editions have mixed fortunes. The former saw the peak audience decrease by 25% and the average online number fall by 42% compared to 2022. A lot of the blame can be put on the pre-event logistical issues, due to which several teams, including NAVI, missed the IEM Dallas 2023, resulting in the viewership being much lower than in the previous iteration of the series.
The same can be said about The ESL Impact League Season 3, which recovered from a dip in Season 2 but lagged far behind the number one entry, which is the debut season. The likes of Gaules and nahzinhaa either streaming fewer portions of season three or missing from the broadcasting list seemed to hit this competition.
The HCS 2023 Global Invitational ended as the second most popular event in this discipline this year, behind the Year 2 Kickoff Major Charlotte. However, it was nowhere near the viewership numbers of rival disciplines like Call of Duty and Apex Legends.
Fans who missed out on this DreamHack iteration need not worry, as next is DreamHack Summer in Jönköping from June 16 to June 19. Next comes DreamHack Valencia from July 6 to July 9, before the series reaches Hyderabad (October 29 to October 31), Atlanta (December 15 to December 17), and Hannover (December 14 to December 17).
