Asian Games 2022 will host esports competitions for the second time in its history. Players along with other athletes will once again win medals at the 19th Asian Games — but this will be the first time the medals will be counted in the overall national team score. Esports Charts tells you how Asian countries have equated esports with sports.
In 2018, athletes were awarded by sets of medals in five demonstration disciplines, whereas by 2022, eight computer games were included in the medal count, and esports was included in the "Mind Sports" section. In addition to computer game contests, breakdancing was included in the competition program as well.
Four years ago, the Asian Games hosted demonstration League of Legends, Arena of Valor, Hearthstone, StarCraft II, Pro Evolution Soccer, and Clash Royale competitions. By 2022, the latter three have been removed from the list of disciplines, but Dota 2, FIFA, Street Fighter V, as well as a Chinese mobile MOBA Dream of the Three Kingdoms 2 and a special version of PUBG Mobile have been added.
Besides PUBG Mobile, a special version of Arena of Valor was also created for Asian Games. We should remind you that both games are banned for distribution in India: as a result, specifically for this market Tencent published new analogues: Clash of Titans and Battlegrounds Mobile.

Two VR disciplines, Robot Masters and VR Sports, will be demonstration esports disciplines at Asian Games 2022. There are no details about these competitions yet, but VR continues to slowly but surely enter the esports ecosystem. We should recall that some VR games competitions take place on certain competitive platforms, including ECL (e.g., Echo Arena, Echo Combat, Onward, and Space Junkies).
The 19th Asian Games will be held from September 10 to 25 in Hangzhou, China. There will be 44 countries, whose National Olympic committees are members of the Olympic Council of Asia, participating in the games.
