World Championship is coming back to North America from the 29th of September until the 16 of October. The event will be held in Mexico City, New York City, Georgia, and San Francisco, with each city hosting a different part of the tournament. If for some reason you’re not familiar with the event: League of Legends is one of the biggest esports in the world, and the World Championship is the pinnacle of the game.

Worlds 2022 will feature the best 24 squads in the world. These teams come from China, Europe, North America, South Korea, Brazil, Japan, Vietnam, Turkey, Oceania, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. All the teams here qualified from either winning their league, placing top two in the regional qualifier, or from the championship points they accumulated throughout both splits of 2022. This year the tournament prize pool will be $2 million.

Format

Just like in past years the event will have a play-in stage, a group stage, and a knockout stage. In the play-in, 12 teams, divided into two groups with six squads each, will play for the four spots that give access to the group stage, the actual main event of the tournament.

The group stage will have the best 16 teams in the world, divided into four groups of four, where teams from the same region can't be paired in a group. Teams will then play a double round-robin, with the first and second place of each group moving on to the knockout stage.

Only the eighth best teams will be present in the knockout stage. Here they will play in a single elimination bracket, facing each other in a best-of-five series. The last team standing will be crowned World Champions, and enter the history books.

Everything indicates that this year's edition of the World Championship will be a very exciting one. With multiple title favorites and the usual regional rivalries, it will entertain thousands of viewers from all around the world. With the tournament moving away from its pandemic format, where crowds weren't allowed, it will deliver an even better viewing experience.

Worlds statistics by Peak Viewers (2017-2022)

Last year the World Championship had amazing viewership stats, with 4 million Peak Viewers watching the grand final of the event, and 1.2 million viewers would regularly watch the tournament. Numbers that are difficult to beat but not impossible, since the World Championship sets records year after year.
