OpTic Gaming fall short in third straight CDL Major final amid 260K live viewers peak

OpTic Texas suffered their third straight Call of Duty League 2026 Major final defeat, losing to Los Angeles Thieves in a dramatic championship match that peaked at over 260,000 live viewers, according to Esports Charts.

The Call of Duty League 2026 Stage 3 Major ended with exactly the kind of grand final that makes a tournament easy to remember and painful to rewatch for one half of the arena. Los Angeles Thieves and OpTic Texas went the full distance in a best-of-seven series, with LA Thieves eventually winning the championship 4:3. 

OpTic, however, had the series exactly where they wanted it before the match slipped away. On the fifth map, Brandon "Dashy" Otell produced one of the standout moments of the entire final, winning a clutch 1v2 and closing the map with a quickscope that sent the Atlanta crowd into chaos. For a moment, it looked like the perfect championship highlight: OpTic on match point, their fans losing their minds in the venue, and one of the team’s biggest names delivering under pressure. 

Then, somehow, OpTic let it slip. LA Thieves responded by taking the next two maps, flipping the series into another brutal grand final collapse. For OpTic, the defeat carried extra weight because it was not an isolated miss. It marked their third consecutive Major final loss in the 2026 season, after previously falling short against Paris Gentle Mates and then against their historic rivals, FaZe Vegas.

Still, it is hard to frame OpTic’s season as anything close to a failure. This was their fifth consecutive grand final appearance, a level of consistency the organization has not seen since the famous OpTic dynasty era of 2015-2017. That legendary run, built around names such as Seth “Scump” Abner, Matthew "FormaL" Piper, Ian "Crimsix" Porter and Damon "Karma" Barlow, is widely remembered as one of the most accomplished periods in Call of Duty esports history.

The Grand Final was by far the most popular match of the tournament and the only one to exceed 200,000 peak viewers. It drew 33% more viewers than the event’s second-most-watched match, OpTic Gaming’s upper-bracket final clash against Toronto KOI.

In overall viewership terms, the event recorded the lowest peak and average audience figures of the three CDL Majors held so far in 2026. Compared to the previous event in the series, both metrics were down by 1.4% and 5.4%, respectively, so the decline was hardly critical.

The tournament did improve on the second Major by Hours Watched, although this was largely a result of Activision Blizzard’s latest format experiment. The event returned to a once-standard structure with GSL-style groups and a double-elimination playoff bracket, increasing total airtime and, as a result, overall watch time.

The 2026 Call of Duty League season has been highly competitive so far, and the stakes keep rising with every event. Stage 4 gets underway next week, as qualifiers for the season’s fourth Major begin on May 29.
