PGL Wallachia sees a bit fewer viewers compared to ESL One Birmingham Group Stage
Halfway through PGL Wallachia Season 1, only eight of the initial 16 teams have progressed from the group stage. Notably, well-known teams such as Team Secret, Shopify Rebellion and BetBoom Team Team failed to secure playoff spots. Esports Charts has analyzed the group stage matches, revealing that the inaugural PGL Wallachia garnered fewer viewers compared to ESL One Birmingham 2024. Particularly significant are the surge in the Russian-speaking audience and the waning interest in English broadcasts.
Wallachia is a part of Dota 2 tournament series that PGL will hold throughout 2024-2026. The series will consist of at least eight tournaments, each with a prize pool of one million dollars. These championships will stand alongside other tier-1 Dota 2 esports events regarding prize pools and the level of participating teams. Given this and the fact that it is the first tournament in the series, it makes sense to compare PGL Wallachia Season 1 with the most recent similar event in Europe: ESL One Birmingham 2024.
The group stage broadcasts of PGL Wallachia Season 1 accumulated over 6.5M Hours Watched, surpassing the group stage of ESL One Birmingham 2024 by 26%. This increase is largely due to the notably longer Swiss stage of PGL Wallachia, lasting nearly twice as long as ESL Birmingham's groups.
Despite this, PGL Wallachia fell short of ESL Birmingham in terms of both average and peak concurrent viewership, with gaps of 29% and 8% respectively. An intriguing contrast lies in the audience demographics of the two tournaments: the Romanian event drew a larger number of Russian-speaking viewers, while English-speaking viewers dominated ESL Birmingham. This discrepancy can be attributed to the presence of one additional Russian team in PGL Wallachia's lineup: Virtus.pro.

The most highly anticipated match during the Swiss stage of PGL Wallachia Season 1 was the face-off between Team Spirit and BetBoom, which peaked at over 235.3K viewers. Notably, this match was a decider series determining a spot in the playoffs. Also ranking among the top three most popular matches were the clashes between Team Secret vs Virtus.pro and BOOM Esports vs Gaimin Gladiators.
Based on current statistics, official Russian-language channels continue to hold dominance in audience reach for PGL Wallachia Season 1. Hence, it's unsurprising that the Russian derby between Team Spirit and BetBoom claimed the highest viewership, being the most eagerly anticipated match for Russian-speaking audiences. Peak viewership on English-language broadcasts is notably lower at present; however, in terms of watch time and average viewership, English content matches Russian, largely due to the availability of a greater number of English channels.

The playoffs for PGL Wallachia Season 1 kicked off on May 16, with 8 of the original 16 tournament participants advancing in their pursuit of the championship title. The ultimate victor will be decided on May 19 through a best-of-5 series. You can track the tournament's developments on the live coverage page.
