Perfect World Shanghai Major's top chat moments: MongolZ’s fairy tale and NAVI’s shocking exit

Even before the playoffs, the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 delivered countless thrilling and unforgettable matches, packed with highlights that left no viewer indifferent. During the group stage alone, fans posted over 3.7 million messages in Twitch chats, reacting to jaw-dropping plays and hilarious fails. But which matches saw the highest chat activity? How do a match’s viewership metrics correlate with its chat engagement? Are there any patterns? Which demographics are the most active in chats, and what moment sparked the biggest buzz? Esports Charts dives into all these questions and more in today’s analysis.

The most talked-about series at the Major so far was the clash between FaZe Clan and FURIA Esports in the fifth round of the Elimination Stage, with both teams battling for a spot in the playoff bracket. It’s no surprise the matchup generated so much hype: two top-10 teams in the HLTV rankings going head-to-head in what became the most-watched match of the major so far. On one side was FaZe Clan, the legendary European squad with a track record of championship victories, including PGL Major Antwerp 2022 and the Intel Grand Slam Season 4. On the other side was FURIA Esports, Brazil’s last hope for a playoff spot, led by their captain FalleN, a two-time Major champion and a beloved figure among Brazilian fans. This convergence of high stakes, star power, and passionate fan bases made the match an unforgettable spectacle.

It’s pretty interesting that three of the most talked-about matches featured HEROIC, and there are a few reasons why. First, HEROIC was one of only two teams (along with MIBR) to play the most best-of-3 series in the Elimination Stage, and those games made it to the top. In those series, the Danish squad played the maximum number of maps, but it's also fair to say that these games reached the top because of HEROIC's competition.

These games had plenty of overtimes and thrilling storylines from HEROIC's opponents that kept fans on the edge of their seats. For example, the match between HEROIC and The MongolZ got a lot of attention from viewers because the Mongolian team had the opportunity to make  it to the major playoffs for the first time in their history and they took it.

The HEROIC vs. Team Spirit match drew a lot of Russian-speaking fans to the broadcast since the Danes were facing off against one of the top Eastern European teams, which also advanced to the tournament playoffs after their match. The showdown with Natus Vincere ended up being the biggest surprise of the stage, as the Ukrainian club unexpectedly missed out on the Knockout Stage.

The Wildcard vs. Passion UA game was the only match from the Opening Stage to make it into the top 5. This match decided which team would make it to the Elimination Stage, and the winner was only determined in overtime on the third map. Passion UA had the chance to become the first team with an all-Ukrainian roster at the major, and they were heavily supported on Ukrainian-language broadcasts. Unfortunately, they fell just short of defeating their opponent.

The most discussed matches often align with the most popular ones. However, this isn’t always the case, as the number of messages is heavily influenced by how long the series lasts. For instance, the Natus Vincere vs. MIBR match made the top 3 for the most popular of the Elimination Stage, but it didn’t crack the list of the most discussed. It peaked at over half a million viewers, but since it was a single-map game, fans didn’t have much time to flood the chat with messages. On the other hand, less popular matches, like HEROIC vs The MongolZ, ended up being more talked about because they went the full three maps.

Let’s take a look at the chat dynamics of the match that recorded the most messages sent. The peak of viewer engagement came in the final minutes of the FaZe Clan vs. FURIA Esports; viewers sent the maximum number of messages per minute during the very last round of the third map.

The second peak came in the 18th round when the Brazilian player skullz pulled off a crucial clutch, taking on four opponents alone. That round marked the start of FURIA’s comeback in the series, though they only managed to win a few more rounds. Regardless, it was one of the standout moments, not just of the match but of the entire stage.

Most peaks in viewer activity happen during the final rounds of matches and the post-series handshakes between teams. Moments like skullz’s clutch are rare exceptions, where something extraordinary happens in the game, or a player pulls off a truly incredible highlight.

OhnePixel and Gaules are two of the biggest casters in Counter-Strike, boasting huge audiences and high chat activity. But reach doesn’t always equal engagement. A great example of this is former pro player CooperTV: while his channel is relatively small, his viewers were far more engaged than those on many bigger channels. For instance, his audience sent more messages than viewers on the pgl_cs2 channel.

Looking at the ratio of watch time to chat messages in broadcasts of different languages, we can make a few observations: English-speaking viewers, as well as those watching in Spanish, German, and French, are very active in the chats: their message share is higher than the percentage of total watch time in those languages. Portuguese and Polish broadcasts show a more balanced interaction, with chat activity matching their watch time. However, Russian-language broadcasts have a noticeable imbalance: while there are a lot of viewers, they tend to be less active in the chat compared to fans from other language groups.

The Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 playoffs will take place from December 12 to 15. The stage will kick off with a match between The MongolZ and MOUZ, who previously met in the Elimination Stage, with the Mongolian team coming out on top.
