West teams seal Playoffs berths at Overwatch League 2023 - Summer Stage Qualifiers
The Overwatch League 2023 - Summer Stage Qualifiers, a hybrid event conducted from July 13 to September 4, saw the top four from each region qualify for the respective next stage. It ended as the second-most watched Overwatch event this year so far, although the peak concurrent viewership was pretty low. It must be noted that a selected few East matches were held at the WDG eSports Studio in Seoul, South Korea.
From the East region, all ten teams were assured of spots at the Overwatch League 2023 - Summer Stage Knockouts. Meanwhile, the sides to advance to the Overwatch League 2023 - Playoffs from the West segment were Atlanta Reign, Florida Mayhem, and Houston Outlaws, while the next seven rosters progressed to the Overwatch League 2023 - Play-Ins.
Essential stats and most popular matches from the OWL 2023: Summer Stage Qualifiers
The Overwatch League 2023 - Summer Stage Qualifiers recorded 56K Peak Viewers during the Week 1, Day 2 Los Angeles derby LA Valiant and LA Gladiators, which the former won 3:2. Interestingly, there were ten different teams on this most popular matches list, which is a rarity, with all of them coming from the West region.
Moreover, four of these five entries came from the first week, with the exception being the Western US derby between Vegas Eternal and San Francisco Shock, with the latter coming out runaway 3:0 victors. This competition also registered 5.3M Hours Watched and 31K Average Viewers over 171 hours of airtime.

Atlanta Reign, perhaps the most consistent side in the Overwatch League, was the most popular side by average online audiences. However, it was a tough fight between the top five teams, with just 1K viewers separating them. There were no close calls regarding platforms and languages, with YouTube and English dominating the overall watch hours charts.
One thing to note was that despite the popularity of Western teams over Eastern ones, the distribution of players is largely dominated by South Korea, a major market for the discipline. In fact, 99 of the 146 e-athletes participating were from this East Asian nation, with the United States the next best with 17 representatives and China being the only other country whose player total hit double-digits.
Most watched Overwatch competitions in 2023 (January to September)
The Overwatch League 2023 - Summer Stage Qualifiers became the second-most watched event in the discipline this year. The only entry ahead of it is its spring iteration, which managed 6.8M HW, while its mark of 118K PV is also a record for 2023. This acted as a prelude to a successful Overwatch League 2023 Midseason Madness, which amassed 20% more PV than 2022’s iteration.
However, the peak concurrent viewership during the summer edition was much lower than its spring counterpart, 108.4% less, to be precise. This could be because there was no community casting or watch party involved, with only the official channels live broadcasting the entire show. The latter event, meanwhile, had almost three times the number of channels live streaming it, with at least five content creators simultaneously keeping up with the happenings.
Moreover, so far this year, the discipline’s premier tournament has seen much audience instability. The audiences for its competitions have fluctuated significantly, with watchers turning up in droves if there are in-game drops or the more popular sides are in action in the two regions.
The next event in the cycle will be the Overwatch League 2023 - Play-Ins, where the fourth to tenth-placed West sides from the Summer Stage Qualifiers will battle it out from September 9 to September 17 in a double elimination bracket for two slots in the Playoffs. Concerning the East region, the third to sixth-placed teams from its season standings will face off from September 15 to September 17 in a double elimination bracket for the single berth in the Playoffs.

Talking about the Overwatch League 2023 - Playoffs, this tournament will begin on September 28 and run till October 1 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto. So far, the confirmed sides are Atlanta Reign, Florida Mayhem, and Houston Outlaws (progressed from the West Summer Stage Qualifiers). Three more will join them from the Play-Ins and the other two from the Regular Season in the East region.
Overwatch is still looking to reach the heights of the pre-pandemic era, which is when most of its successful events took place. Of course, the organizers have brought major changes to the league, involving sides from the Overwatch Contenders series, but that hasn't really helped with viewership numbers. It remains to be seen how the remaining competitions play out and what kind of stats they put up.
