Mongolian broadcasts set a viewership record during the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 Elimination Stage
The Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 is heading into its final stages — this past weekend, the last matches of the Elimination Stage were played, deciding all the teams that made it to the playoff bracket. Esports Charts has taken a look at the results and shared some insights on viewer trends and engagement during the broadcasts.
The Elimination Stage was a breakout moment for The MongolZ, the only Asian representatives left at the major, as they won all three of their matches and, for the first time in their history, secured a spot in the playoffs of a major. Meanwhile, Natus Vincere (NAVI) surprised their fans — the winners of the recent PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 managed to beat only Team Liquid and GamerLegion, but lost to MIBR, Team Spirit, and HEROIC, failing to make it into the top 8. Besides Natus Vincere, another favorite that didn’t make it to the playoffs through the Elimination Stage was the Brazilian team FURIA Esports. In the crucial match, FalleN and his teammates couldn’t hold off FaZe Clan, despite leading the series 1-0, ultimately losing 1-2.

Viewership statistics of Elimination Stage at Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024
The viewer dynamics at the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 didn't change much during the Elimination Stage. The Chinese tournament is still far behind the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 in terms of audience reach, and it's unlikely this will be fixed anytime soon. It's important to note that our article does not include data from Chinese streaming services due to certain reasons. As we mentioned in our Opening Stage recap, the time zone differences result in the Shanghai tournament losing a significant chunk of the European and Brazilian audiences, which are key regions in Counter-Strike. For example, the average viewership on Gaules' Twitch channel dropped by 67%, while the same metric for ohnepixel’s channel was halved. A similar trend was seen on PGL's official Twitch and YouTube channels. The only major community casters whose reach either stayed the same or even grew slightly compared to the major in Denmark were Russian-speaking streamers like evelone2004, shadowkekw, and skywhywalker.
For all the main languages, the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 is still behind the previous major in terms of viewership, but there are some positive trends in smaller language groups. For example, the peak viewership for Mongolian streams reached 54.7K Peak Viewers, setting a new record for that language across all Counter-Strike events. The previous record was 37.3K viewers during IEM Rio 2024. As we can see, The MongolZ's strong performance attracted a lot of fans to Mongolian streams. Interestingly, the vast majority of viewers from Mongolia preferred to watch the matches on YouTube.
Other languages that saw a slight increase in peak viewership compared to PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 include German and Czech. The average viewership for Tagalog and Chinese streams on Western platforms also grew a bit. New audiences appeared for Bulgarian, Italian, and Danish streams, but there were no Japanese broadcasts for the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024.
Lastly, it's worth noting that during the Elimination Stage of PGL Major Copenhagen 2024, the Turkish streams peaked at over 64.4K Peak Viewers (thanks to Eternal Fire performance). However, at the same stage of the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024, that number dropped to just 2.3K PV. Turkish is an important language for Counter-Strike, with a large community and popular casters like Jahrein, but they have not been prevalent during the Shanghai tournament since there was no Turkish team competing.
