Escape from Tarkov developers, Battlestate Games, recently announced the quasi-full release closed beta of Escape from Tarkov: Arena. The Arena DLC for Escape from Tarkov has a higher focus on deathmatching and Call of Duty lobby-style gameplay, moving away slightly from the game’s original realistic shooter/survival theme.

One immediately evident advantage of the new DLC, which can be played as a standalone game, was this new style of gameplay was better suited for esports. Rounds were face-paced with a 90-second timer and the event showed off a unique esports discipline to be explored with Escape from Tarkov: Arena.

The tournament was a direct collaboration between Battlestate Games and DreamHack Hannover; the festival’s official partner was Battlestate Games. Battlestate Games partnered with an established tournament host for this event, and it paid off in a significant viewership boost.

The event was wildly successful for a new venture into esports. The Head Eyes Showdown received 121.7K Peak Viewers for its Grand Final. The new Escape from Tarkov: Arena DLC became the most popular Tarkov esports event of the year. The inaugural event received almost double the viewership of the Twitch Rivals event held only a month ago, and this Twitch Rivals event was already the most popular event for Tarkov in two years thanks to a boost in viewership from community casters and players.

In total, the event garnered over 1M Hours Watched in just 24 hours of broadcasting. The 43K Average Viewers figure is similar to the viewership achieved by a regional event in CS:GO or League of Legends, a significant achievement for the new release.

Compared to all Tarkov events in the Esports Charts database, the recent Arena event ranks third by Peak Viewers. It falls behind two of the Punisher tournaments held in 2021. The Punisher events had existed for a while, but 2021 was their first year hosting their matches on official Tarkov servers.

The event series quickly gained popularity, and a Tarkov content creator Pestily, who reached 1M Followers on Twitch in 2021, also broadcasted the events and reached peaks of over 80K concurrent viewers. The Arena event was broadcast by over 100 channels, and yet it received the majority of its viewership from the official broadcast. The Arena event enjoyed a healthy mix of official broadcasts and community casting to achieve high viewership peaks.

The Escape from Tarkov: Arena event at DreamHack Atlanta 2023 was a success for the game developers. Their partnership with DreamHack helped expose them to an audience outside of strictly Escape from Tarkov fans, and the new esports potential of the title was broadcast to hundreds of thousands of fans. The future of esports for the technically unreleased early access DLC Escape from Tarkov: Arena is unclear, but the esports of the title earned a solid springboard with this recent event.
