Call of Duty titles added as growing Esports World Cup 2024 line-up hits 21 games
Earlier on June 13, the Esports World Cup came up with a surprising announcement on its social media handles, though it spelled more fun for fans. The upcoming mega event will see another massive entry in the form of Call of Duty, with two of the legendary franchise's titles — Warzone and Modern Warfare 3 — set to be part of a packed line-up of events.
This cross-game event now features an astounding line-up of some of the most popular competitive video games ever, including Counter-Strike 2, EA Sports FC 24, Honor of Kings, League of Legends, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, PUBG Mobile, Rocket League, Tekken 8, and Rennsport. These titles will combine for an unprecedented total prize pool of over $60 million for the inaugural edition, as per the organizer.
Games confirmed so far at the Esports World Cup 2024
The Esports World Cup 2024 will be held in Riyadh from July 3 to August 25, meaning fans get eight weeks of action across the above disciplines. Matches will be held in a 645,000-square-foot venue containing four separate esports arenas. Each championship will have prize pools that combine to exceed $33 million, with a $50,000 MVP Award handed out to a standout participant in each game.
Call of Duty joining proceedings only adds another layer of intrigue and glamor to this summer gaming extravaganza. As one of the eminent shooter disciplines in the competitive space, it attracts thousands of viewers across games and regions.
The announcement added that the Call of Duty: Warzone competition will take place from July 3 to 6 and feature 21 teams competing for a total prize purse of $1 million. Meanwhile, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III tournament will be held from August 15 to 18 as 16 sides battle for a share of the $1.8 million prize pool.
Both tournaments will have a deadline for clubs to sign new participants, which has been extended to 23:59 AST on Thursday, June 27. More details are available in the rulebook, which can be accessed here.
Brief look at Call of Duty esports
As one of the most renowned games in video gaming history, CoD's competitive offerings have been equally well-followed, even if their viewership numbers are not at the level of the top-most disciplines like Valorant, League of Legends, or MLBB. While Call of Duty: MW III ranks 15th for highest-paying esports events in 2024, its Warzone cousin comes in at the 27th spot.

Both games perform much better when looking at peak concurrent viewership this year, with Modern Warfare III ranking in at 17th and Warzone coming 20th. Not surprisingly, many of the top names on these tables will be seen in action in Saudi Arabia.
Over the past few years, these games have also seen an upturn in audience reach. This is especially true for MW III, many of whose most watched and most popular tournaments have come over the past two seasons.

Even Warzone saw the recent World Series of Warzone 2023 Global Finals emerge as the game's most popular event ever, when not counting streamer showmatches. Moreover, the entire WSOW 2023 season showed significant growth in key metrics compared to the previous year, with the Airtime increasing by 147%, the total watch time almost doubling, and the peak viewership number growing by 30%.
With so much happening in the CoD esports scene, it wasn't a bad decision from Activision to go ahead and partner with the Esports World Cup Foundation. While Warzone fans can look forward to the upcoming gaming carnival, Modern Warfare III followers will first have to get through the season's fourth Major and then the Call of Duty League 2024: Playoffs before shifting their attention to the Middle East.
