S1mple’s return to offline Counter-Strike helped ESL Challenger to set new viewership record at Katowice 2024

In Katowice, Poland, ESL Challenger recently held their most popular tournament ever, thanks to community interest in a certain GOAT’s return to Counter-Strike esports. The ESL Challenger Katowice 2024 tournament, held in one of Counter-Strike’s most historic cities, reached 188.8K Peak Viewers, marking a new record for the ESL Challenger series.

While the event itself was indeed popular in comparison to other ESL Challengers, it’s clear to see which matches fans were most interested in. Team Falcons rocked up the event with Ukrainian player s1mple in tow, who they acquired from NAVI on a three-month loan.

S1mple has been looking to get back into Counter-Strike competition recently but hinted at the fact that he is still under contract at NAVI, with an expensive buy-out dissuading teams from picking him up. Former professional player and current industry insider OverDrive reported s1mple’s buyout at $3M. Team Falcons, with their star-roster of Astralis alumni, clearly had the cash to acquire s1mple from NAVI on loan, and their viewership in Counter-Strike esports has exploded since. 

In total, the tournament achieved 1.7M Hours Watched and maintained 63.7K Average Viewers. This makes the ESL Challenger Katowice 2024 the most-watched ESL Challenger event ever by average viewers, although this metric was heavily inflated by Team Falcon’s two matches at the event. 

ESL Challenger Katowice 2024 was not s1mple’s first event under the Team Falcons banner, but it was his first offline LAN event in over a year, since the ESL Pro league Season 18 with NAVI. S1mple’s matches with Team Falcons immediately broke records for ESL Challenger viewership, with the first match against SAW reaching 165.7K Peak Viewers.

Although SAW are supported by a sizeable Portuguese-language audience of their own, Team Falcon’s second match against Eternal Fire reached even higher, with 188.8K Peak Viewers tuning in to see s1mple perform at LAN once again. This peak viewership was also fuelled by Team Falcons and Eternal Fire heading into overtime on the first map of their match, although Eternal Fire easily secured the victory, not losing a single round during overtime.

The peak viewership for this match was almost entirely fuelled by English-speaking international fans, Russian-speaking viewers, and Ukrainians. S1mple has established himself as one of the greatest Counter-Strike players in the esports’ entire franchise, and his presence is able to elevate minor Counter-Strike events to brand-new heights. 

  Most popular ESL Challenger events by peak concurrent viewership   

Compared to other ESL Challenger events, the recent Katowice tournament was by far the most popular edition of the series yet. The second-most popular event was the ESL Challenger #48, which was the first-ever event under the ESL Challenger name. This event received a majority of its viewership from Portuguese-speaking fans, and no other ESL Challenger event was able to match this.

In fact, almost all the most popular ESL Challenger events received a majority of their peak viewership from Portuguese-speaking, including Brazilian-Portuguese, fans. The one exception to this rule was the recent Katowice 2024 edition, which earned its peak viewership through international English-speaking and Eastern European audiences in support of s1mple. 

S1mple’s popularity cannot be understated, and the Ukrainian player is bringing a massive wave of exposure to Team Falcon’s brand. With the player returning to Counter-Strike 2, viewership for events featuring him will likely increase massively for many audiences. Although it remains unlikely he will return to NAVI’s starting roster, considering the team’s massive competitive success at the moment, it would likely mark one of NAVI’s most popular moments if it does happen.
