How is AI transforming esports and betting?

While betting has been with us for centuries, esports betting is a relatively recent phenomenon. But not as recent as the AI explosion. Invading areas such as finance, art, and content creation, the AI evolution has not left the realms of esports and betting untouched. But how exactly is AI shaping esports and betting?

AI can help point the way to victory, but it still falls on the players to deliver, which keeps esports exciting.

By crunching the data across performances, AI can identify areas of strengths and weaknesses. By directly converting these probabilities into odds, the AI can help identify potentially profitable betting opportunities.

AI is hard to beat in the area of data analysis. Some bettors add an automation level to the process, allowing the AI to place any bets it identifies. While this takes much of the work out of betting, it does miss some of the nuance that AI finds hard to weigh, e.g. motivation levels, coaching/line-up changes, likely fatigue etc. AI may suggest a side has a 70% chance of winning, but if a star player is suffering a notable dip in form, human judgment still matters.

Bigger benefit for bigger teams?

In common with many edges, the AI evolution may initially be of greater benefit to the bigger teams. With more resources, staff, and time on their hands, the leading esports outfits are better placed to sharpen the AI outputs to their benefit. Smaller set-ups may rely on instinct and improvisation to a greater extent.

How this all plays out remains to be seen. While AI informs decisions, it cannot guarantee results. Teams and bettors can follow AI guidance to the letter and still lose, while others may ignore the AI output entirely and win. 

AI is best thought of as a new tool, but it is one which is here to stay as the human-AI partnership becomes established in esports and betting.
