The unexpected defeat of Karmine Corp and the league’s new record: results of LFL Spring 2022

Following the Spanish league, the first split of the season ended in France. The LFL Spring 2022 playoffs will be remembered by fans not only for the victory of LDLC OL (which is the first national title for the team in two and a half years) but also for the unexpected failure of one of the competition’s favorites: Karmine Corp. Esports Charts overviews the results of the tournament, its record viewership statistics, and also compares the audience of the regional leagues in France and Spain.

Results of LFL Spring 2022

The French league made a lot of publicity in the off-season. The biggest news was the transfer of former Fnatic and G2 Esports star Martin Rekkles Larsson to Karmine Corp, the league’s most popular team of the last season. Fans of the team, as well as all League of Legends fans from France, expected that the arrival of such a high-ranked player would take the performance of KC to an unprecedented level. And yet on the contrary, for the first time since joining the league, Karmine Corp did not reach the LFL final.

Karmine Corp had a rather successful regular season and took the second spot in the group stage. But the team wasn’t in its best shape when it came to the playoffs: first, it lost to the future tournament winners from LDLC OL, and then was unexpectedly defeated by Team BDS Academy in the lower bracket. Although the team still made it to the EU Masters, the club's management is unlikely to be satisfied with such a result.

Fans of Misfits Premier also had a reason to feel down. Before the start of the spring split, the club went through a near-complete update of the roster (only Woolite remained on the roster from the former team) but it could not achieve the same success as the previous iterations of the team: in the first round of the playoffs, the team was defeated by Vitality.Bee. As a result, Misfits Premier finished the split in fifth place and did not qualify for the EU Masters. This is the worst result in the league in the team’s history.

The winner of the tournament was LDLC OL, fully making up for the disastrous last season. In the final, the fans of the team had to be nervous, as the BDS Academy team bounced back from a score of 0:2, but in the end, LDLC OL dominated the decisive map and won the LFL for the first time since April 2019.

LPL Spring 2022 viewership statistics

LFL matches took place from mid-January to the end of March, and they were on the air for 137.5 hours in total. During this time, viewers spent more than 8.9M hours watching games, with a total of 65K Average Viewers following the event.

The top 5 most popular matches of the event all featured Karmine Corp, as they were covered on their channel by the owner of the organization and one of the most popular streamers in France — Kamet0 – who managed to attract 90.4K Peak Viewers. The most popular match of the tournament was traditionally the encounter between KC and Solary – this group stage match gathered 221.1K viewers, which is a new record for the league.

In France, as well as in Spain, the tournament matches were covered by the creators who are the owners of organizations. But in the LFL, the influence of the abovementioned Kamet0 was less impactful as compared to Ibai in the Superliga. The French streamer accounted for only 15% of the tournament's Total Hours Watched, and the official LFL broadcast was more popular than the main LVP Superliga stream.

LFL Spring 2022 has become the most-watched tournament in the history of the league by all metrics. In terms of the Average Viewers, it lost only to the LFL 2021 Final, but this is due to the shorter duration of the previous tournament (only two matches took place in the finals of last year, and both with the participation of Karmine Corp).

According to the results of the spring split, the Spanish and French regional leagues showed comparable viewer statistics figures. Although LVP Superliga was more successful in terms of Peak Viewers, LFL was ahead by Average Viewers and total Hours Watched. Note that in both cases, the statistics were strongly influenced by Kamet0 and Ibai. Should we not take into account the statistics of streamers, the French tournament will be ahead of the Spanish tournament in terms of audience.
