MPL PH Season 9: Viewership Stats and Tournament Results

The MPL Philippines Season 9 final was held on May 2 at the SMX Convention Center in Manila. For the first time in the history of the league, a non-Philippine organization won the tournament. RSG Philippines (Singapore-based org) defeated Omega Esports in the final with a 4:1 score; the champion got $30K. Both finalists will represent the Philippines in 2022 Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Southeast Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur in mid-June.

The tournament lasted more than two months, but because of the long pauses between game days, its airtime was 158 hours. During that time, the number of Hours Watched exceeded 22 million.

Omega Esports participated in 4 of the Top 5 matches by Peak Viewers, including the tournament's final game against RSG Philippines, which had the highest number of PV in the entire tournament — 626K.

It is also worth mentioning that the Top 5 most popular matches include not only the playoffs, but also the group stage matches. Omega Esports' victory over Nexplay EVOS in the group stage showed the fourth highest Peak Viewers result, while a game of tournament champions RSG against ECHO rounds out the top five.

Most Watched MPL Philippines Season 9 Teams

The runner-up in the tournament, Omega Esports, became the leader among the teams by Hours Watched, having a far higher result than others. It played the largest number of series in the playoffs (5), which helped them accumulate 9.4 million Hours Watched (41% of the tournament's total). The second team is ONIC Esports Philippines: it had to face the top two teams in the tournament during the playoffs, which resulted in them racking up 5.9 million Hours Watched. RSG Philippines, the tournament champion, rounds out the top three with 5.4 million Hours Watched.

Comparison With Past MPL Philippines Seasons

Although the league's playoffs were held in a LAN-format with live audience for the first time in the post-Covid phase, MPL Philippines Season 9 became only the third most popular event in the past four years, following last year's Seasons 7 and 8. It should be noted that the decline of viewership indicators is mainly due to Facebook Filipino broadcast being less and less popular over time: compare to Season 7, the HW of the stream has dropped by 75%. In addition, the interest of the audience could not but be affected by the early elimination of the world champions Blacklist International (they took last place in the group stage), as well as EVOS Legends, one of the most popular teams in the region, which lost in the first round of playoffs.

MPL Philippines Season 7 accumulated 30% more Hours Watched then the last tournament. And the Peak Viewers number at the game of the two grands Execration and Blacklist International during the MPL Philippines Season 7 final exceeded the Peak Viewers number of MPL Philippines Season 9 almost twice, by 45%.

The first 2022 ML:BB Southeast Asia Cup matches kick off on June 11, where Omega Esports, RSG Philippines and other 10 teams will fight for the Southeast Asia Championship in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.
