PGL Major Stockholm 2021 has just started — and it’s already among the most watched events in CS:GO history!
The long-awaited PGL Major Stockholm 2021 started on October 26. The first day of the tournament brought a lot of unexpected results, and the event itself almost entered the top 10 most watched events in the history of the discipline! Esports Charts summarizes the results of the Challengers Stage Day 1 and breaks down first viewership statistics of the event.

The format of the Major practically has not changed compared to the previous events of the series: the only innovation is that now the decisive games (for elimination or for reaching the next stage) will use a new seeding system. Thus, on the first day of the Challengers Stage 16 best-of-1 matches took place.

On the very first day of PGL Major Stockholm over 667.5K Peak Viewers tuned in to watch broadcasts: this happened during Team Spirit vs GODSENT and Entropiq vs Astralis games, and more than 70% of this audience watched the game between Brazilian and CIS teams.
The championship lacked only 20 thousand spectators at its peak to immediately enter the top 10 most popular CS:GO tournaments ever by this metric. At the moment, it is bypassed by BLAST Premier Global Final 2020, where 687.6K people were simultaneously watching the final between NAVI and Vitality.
If we look at single matches, the most popular one was the game between ENCE and FaZe Clan: at its peak, the game was simultaneously watched by more than 516.4K viewers — this is 8% more than the audience of the second most popular game (Spirit vs GODSENT).
One more interesting fact: the first game day of the major attracted 39% more Peak Viewers than VCT Masters Berlin. During the first day Valorant event was watched by up to 480K Peak Viewers.
Language statistics
Traditionally, in any prominent CS:GO tournament the main broadcasts are English, Portuguese and Russian. The largest audience of the PGL Major on the first day was the English-speaking audience: the peak reached 326.3K spectators during the ENCE vs FaZe and BIG vs Copenhagen Flames matches.
Portuguese-speaking viewers are the second most active audience. In the second round, when two Brazilian teams Sharks and paiN Gaming played simultaneously (against TyLoo and Renegades, respectively) over 193K Portuguese-speaking CS:GO fans watched the Major's streams at peak.
The audience from the CIS is in third place with 114K viewers at the peak. It was reached during the beginning of matches between Entropiq and Astralis / Movistar Riders and Renegades.
How did the tournament start compared to StarLadder Berlin Major?
The entire CS:GO scene was really excited about the Major, as this is the first tournament of the series in two years. Therefore, it is not surprising that PGL Major Stockholm is showing much better results from day one than the 2019 event held in Berlin.

The Challengers stage will run over four days, and already in the first of them PGL Major Stockholm scored 5.7M Hours Watched. This is more than 45% of the total results of the stage during the StarLadder Berlin Major: with such a pace the current tournament can bypass the previous Major on the third game day.
Similarly, the Stockholm Major gained more Peak Viewers on the first day than the StarLadder Berlin Major for the entire Challengers stage: 667.5K against 432.4K viewers.
If we compare only the first days of both tournaments, the results of the PGL Stockholm Major turn out to be even more impressive. By Hours Watched numbers the growth is 32%, and by peak & average audiences — 54% and 52%, respectively!
***
PGL Major Stockholm 2021 surprises not only with viewership statistics, but also with the results. On the very first day, the four-time Major champions Astralis were on the verge of being knocked out of the tournament, losing in two starting matches. Likewise, the Brazilian teams made a bad debut: three teams at once (GODSENT, Sharks, paiN) risk leaving the tournament today. At the same time, Virtus.pro took a good start at the event (two wins in two matches), even though they changed one of the players shortly before the start of the tournament.
