Anomalous statistics of REPUBLEAGUE Season 3: how Gaules boosted the tournament’s viewership
June 29 marked the end of REPUBLEAGUE Season 3 (CS:GO), where 16 teams from Europe, the CIS, and Brazil competed for a share of €120K prize pool. Several tier-2 teams took part in the event, however, it is mainly interesting due to the final match not even making it into the tournament’s top 20 most popular games. Esports Charts explains how it happened and what was the role of the Brazilian caster Gaules.
The Gaules effect
The matches of group B were marked by an interesting episode that flipped all the viewership statistics upside down. One of the most popular Brazilian streamers, Gaules, decided to watch the matches of Imperial Esports, the team of his friend and countryman Gabriel FalleN Toledo. As a result, the matches of Imperial Esports versus ENTERPRISE esports and forZe scored an abnormal (as compared to the tournament’s other series) Peak Viewers figures: 181K and 141K concurrent viewers, respectively.

The third most popular match of the event was the series between forZe and mouz NXT, which was watched by 108K Peak Viewers. The fact is that this figure was also achieved due to a “Gaules effect”. The Brazilian streamer started watching this match in anticipation of Imperial's game, but the confrontation of forZe vs mouz NXT dragged on: the series lasted three maps and each required additional rounds. This resulted in anomalous viewership statistics.

To obtain a more objective picture of viewership, the statistics on Imperial Esports matches should be compared with the respective data from other teams that the Brazilians have not played against. For example, the roster of FalleN has almost 860K Hours Watched, while the other teams scored 4.5 times fewer Hours Watched. There’s also an almost sixfold difference in favor of the Brazilians in terms of Average Viewers. At the same time, it should be noted that Imperial performed extremely poor in general as they lost both of their matches, and finished the tournament in the 13-16th spot.
The matches streamed by Gaules attracted 5-7 times more viewers as compared to other matches. Interestingly, the final confrontation between ex-MAD Lions and Fnatic turned out to be so unpopular that it did not even enter the top 20 tournament matches in terms of the number of viewers. However, this did not stop the ex-MAD Lions from taking first place and earning $73K.
When taking the previous seasons of the REPUBLEAGUE series into account, it can be seen that the third tournament surpassed its predecessors both in terms of Peak and Average Viewers. But, again, this would hardly have happened without Gaules.
