Stage 3 Major set new viewership records for Call of Duty League
The Call of Duty League 2023: Stage 3 Major ended yesterday with home favorite OpTic Texas going down to Canada’s Toronto Ultra 2:4 in a pulsating grand final match-up. History was created at the tournament, held at the Esports Stadium Arlington, as it became the most-watched CDL event (by Peak Viewers and Hours Watched) since its inception in 2020, also overtaking any offering from its former guise, the Call of Duty World League.
With their win, Toronto Ultra took home a mammoth $200,000 and 65 CDL points, while the runners-up pocketed a cool $120,000 and 50 CDL points. Atlanta FaZe, who finished third, received $80,000 and 40 CDL points, with the fourth-placed Boston Breach, who finished second in the qualifiers, getting $40,000 and 30 CDL points.

The third major of 2023 recorded 335K PV, a new record for the discipline’s esports scene, while the HW count of 5.5 million also set a new mark. Such was the competition’s success that these stats even surpassed the entire watch time of the CWL Pro League 2019 regular season, which had an Airtime that was seven times longer!
The Call of Duty League 2023: Stage 3 Major had an overall Airtime of 31h 45 min and did 175K Average Viewers, another record number for Call of Duty esports. The top team, without any surprises, was host OpTic Texas, who enjoyed 3.1 million HW, and the side featured in four of the top five peak matches in terms of PV.

The most watched game of the tournament was the lower bracket final between OpTic Texas and Atlanta FaZe, which was won by the former 3:1. The summit clash was the second most viewed match-up, almost outdoing the rivalry between FaZe & OpTic at 334K PV.
What was impressive and heartening was that community casting played a big hand in helping the Call of Duty League 2023: Stage 3 Major reach record numbers. It would not have been possible for just the main CDL channel to register such stats, and that is where these non-official handles played a significant role.

Compared to the same event in 2021 (100%) and 2022 (100%), the official CDL handle registered just 41.4% of the overall HW numbers. While the platforms may have differed, it is still a large gap and proves how vital the contributions of other non-officials channels were in posting record-breaking stats.
Just under 50 channels covered the event, including big names like methodz, while the likes of botezlive ensured to cover the grand final, thus contributing to the record peak viewership. While the PV and AV numbers were a big plus for 2023’s competition, it didn’t have the best stats compared to previous CDL tournaments, so the role of the likes of scump and ZooMaa cannot be underestimated.

Speaking of scump, it was reported that OpTic Texas’ star pro-turned-streamer contributed slightly more to the Call of Duty League 2023: Stage 3 Major’s overall viewership than the official Call of Duty Twitch channel during the qualifiers. He did well during the main rounds as well, albeit not with the same level of success.
In terms of the most popular streamers on Twitch, scump came out well on top with 176K PV, followed by the official CDL Twitch channel with 136K PV. FaZe Clan’s ZooMaa, another retired CoD pro turned content creator like scump, rounded off the podium with 27K PV.
However, the most watched channel was the official CoD Twitch at 2.6 million HW, followed by scump with 2.3 million HW. ZooMaa was again third, notching 408K HW as his team made it all the way to third at the event.
Three years into its run, the CDL continues to rake in the numbers; a large part of that success is owed to community casting, with the likes of scump especially making a huge mark thanks to his legendary status within the industry. With two more stages to go before the season-ending Championship LAN event, fans can expect more records to fall.
