YaLLa Compass 2024: The Mongolz triumph and one of the best performances for the Mongolian language in esports
YaLLa Compass 2024, the final event of a new tournament series for Counter-Strike 2, concluded this past weekend in Abu Dhabi. Defying expectations, The Mongolz emerged as the champions. The last time an Asian team achieved such a high result was in 2010, when WeMade Fox won the World eSports Masters. Also this victory not only earned them the largest prize in the organization's history but also brought them close to setting a new record for the Mongolian language in the game.
The YaLLa Compass series began in the fall of 2023 with the YaLLa Compass Fall and YaLLa Compass Spring qualifying tournaments. Invited teams competed for a spot in the LAN finals in Abu Dhabi, with the slots ultimately going to BIG and Sashi Esport.
The organizers of YaLLa Compass 2024 managed to gather a strong lineup of participants, including Astralis, Complexity Gaming, Heroic, FURIA Esports, ENCE, Fnatic, and other top European teams. In total, 11 teams from the top 30 of the HLTV.org world rankings participated. The biggest surprise was the impressive performance of The Mongolz. The Mongolian team first secured first place in their group, and then consecutively defeated Astralis and Ninjas in Pyjamas in the playoff. Both matches were highly intense and included overtime rounds.
Winning the championship brought The Mongolz $200,000, the largest prize in the team's Counter-Strike history. Previously, their financial record was $50,000, won at the MESA Nomadic Masters Spring 2024 just before YaLLa Compass 2024.
The YaLLa Compass 2024 broadcasts generated 2.9 million Hours Watched, matching the results of BetBoom Dacha Belgrade 2024 and the CCT Season 1 Global Finals, both held in May.
The tournament's peak viewership reached 163.1K concurrent viewers. Interestingly, the peak occurred not during the grand final, but in the semifinal match between Astralis and The Mongolz. Both teams delivered an intensely competitive series, requiring multiple overtime rounds to determine the winner on the final map. The Mongolz emerged victorious with a score of 22-19, even though maps typically end when a team wins 13 rounds.
The grand final The Mongolz vs. Ninjas in Pyjamas was only the third most popular match. It ranked behind the series between NiP and FURIA, which was streamed by the Brazilian caster Gaules.
The main broadcast languages for YaLLa Compass 2024 were English, Portuguese, and Russian. Interestingly, Mongolian also performed exceptionally well, accounting for 6% of the total watch time and attracting a peak of over 27.7K concurrent viewers. YaLLa Compass 2024 became the fourth most popular tournament for Mongolian viewers and the second most popular among all Counter-Strike tournaments. The only events that drew more Mongolian viewers were the PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2023, PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2022, and PGL Major Copenhagen 2024.
