The IEM Rio 2026 concluded over the weekend, and it saw Team Vitality become the first side to win two straight ESL Grand Slams, and the first to do so in consecutive years. With almost all the favorites reaching the final phase, the tournament attracted over 1.1 million concurrent viewers, improving on its record as the most popular non-Major CS2 event ever held in Brazil, which was set in the Group Stage.

The French side eased past the Russian favorite Team Spirit 3:0 in the Grand Final, with Robin "ropz" Kool and Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut starring once again. Team Spirit's Danil "⁠donk⁠" Kryshkovets endured what many fans felt was one of his least effective performances in a Grand Final, and that played a part in his side failing to challenge the World No 1 team.

Brazilian favorite FURIA finished in the top four after losing the Third Place Match 0:2 to another prominent side, Team Falcons. The popular Brazilian side's deep run was a major factor in the Intel Extreme Masters Rio 2026 doing so well viewership-wise, led by the hype around Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo playing an emotional last match in front of his home crowd.

This top-tier Counter-Strike 2 competition became the 23rd event in the game's esports history to hit 1M Peak Viewers (PV). As a result, all three key performance metrics shot up when compared to the IEM Rio 2024.

One reason for this higher audience interest was the number of unique channels broadcasting the action, which more than doubled between the 2024 and 2026 iterations. The prize pool has also been increased by four times to now stand at $1 million, adding more prestige to the event in the eyes of fans and streamers.

Most importantly, all the big-game teams played well, especially the ones mentioned above, as they reached the latter stages of the tournament. FURIA continuing its good form by doing well in front of home fans was crucial, and if it had managed to reach the finals, there is a chance the peak viewership numbers could have been even higher.

Nevertheless, a Grand Final between Team Vitality and Team Spirit was a good alternative, as it pitted two of the best teams in Counter-Strike 2 against each other. In the end, the former won to create more history, which was another reason for viewers to tune in.
