LEC hits highest watch time in four years with 2026 Versus event

Mar 03, 2026 6 分 読み

The LEC Versus split concluded with G2 Esports successfully defending their regional title, overcoming a resilient Karmine Corp in a five-game final in Barcelona. Rasmus "Caps" Winther served as the primary catalyst for this victory, delivering a series of performances that solidified his status as one of the league's most decorated players. The championship climax was notably marked by creative drafting, including a rare Anivia selection in the final game that disrupted traditional meta expectations.

This competitive success coincided with a shift in how the league captures audience attention. The tournament reached a four-year high in total hours watched, even as peak concurrent figures fell below the ones set during the 2025 Winter Split. This surge in sustained engagement was largely driven by the experimental inclusion of the guest team Los Ratones, which maintained high interest levels during the regular season before the playoffs transitioned to the established top-tier organizations.

G2’s Clinical Run and the Blue Wall’s Resurgence

G2 Esports’ path to the trophy highlighted a stark contrast between their experimental group stage and their disciplined playoff execution. While the regular season saw G2 drop several games, they entered the bracket stage with renewed focus, maintaining a perfect record of map wins until the grand final. This dominant run provided a sense of closure for the organization, as they successfully avenged their loss to Karmine Corp from the 2025 Winter Split final.

Karmine Corp’s performance throughout the event signaled a return to form after a difficult 2025 campaign. Their path through the lower bracket culminated in a decisive win over Movistar KOI, establishing the "Blue Wall" as a top-tier power once again. By pushing G2 to a fifth game, they demonstrated a level of competitive depth that suggests the gap between Europe's elite teams is narrowing.

With this victory, G2 Esports claims the region's only available slot for First Stand 2026. The squad is scheduled to compete in São Paulo in mid-March, representing the LEC against the victors of the other global leagues.

The "Los Ratones" Factor and Audience Distribution

LEC 2026 Versus Most Popular Matches & General Viewership Statistics

The grand final reached a peak of nearly 735,000 live viewers, representing the highest engagement point of the entire split. Despite this successful conclusion, the viewership data shows an unusual distribution across the tournament stages. Until the final match itself, the playoff series struggled to match the audience numbers recorded during the group stage. In fact, the grand final was the only playoff match to secure a spot among the event's five mos popular games.

This disparity between the two phases is largely attributed to the participation of Los Ratones. As a guest team supported by prominent commentator Marc "Caedrel" Lamont, the roster acted as a massive audience magnet during the initial stage of the competition. While their departure prior to the playoffs led to a dip in average live viewership, the overall structure of the event benefited from the broader roster of teams. The format change, which included two additional invited slots, resulted in a 19.3% increase in total airtime. This expansion in broadcast hours served as the primary driver for the tournament’s growth in total watch time.

Diverging Metrics: Lower Peaks, Higher Retention

LEC 2026 Versus vs. LEC Winter 2025 Livestreaming Viewership Comparison

Comparing the LEC 2026 Versus to the 2025 Winter Split reveals a nuanced set of performance metrics. Both Average Viewers and Peak Viewers experienced declines, dropping by 3.1% and 8.2% respectively. This downward trend was particularly visible in the French and Spanish broadcast segments, which saw reduced engagement compared to the previous year. In contrast, the English-language audience saw substantial growth, and this regional shift is directly linked to the Los Ratones guest slot and the high-engagement co-casting provided by Caedrel.

The most significant improvement occurred in the tournament's total watch time, which increased by 15% year-over-year. This surge established the 2026 Versus split as the most-watched LEC event in the last four years. The combination of an expanded team roster and the previously mentioned increase in total airtime provided more content for viewers to consume, effectively offsetting the minor dips in concurrent audience numbers.

Only three tournaments in the history of the LEC have recorded a higher total watch time than the 2026 Versus split. These benchmarks were all established during the peak engagement years of 2020 to 2022.

The peak viewership remained strong despite the minor decline compared to the 2025 Winter Split. The tournament currently ranks as the eighth most popular event in LEC history by peak audience.

A Global Benchmark in the 2026 Calendar

As of early March, the LEC stands as one of the most successful esports events of the year across primary live viewership indicators. In terms of total watch time, only three major events have surpassed the LEC in 2026 so far. These include the record-breaking M7 World Championship (Mobile Legends: Bang Bang), the LCK Cup 2026 in South Korea, and IEM Krakow 2026, which recently set new benchmarks as the most-watched non-Major tournament in Counter-Strike history

The Road to First Stand

The League of Legends competitive season is steadily completing the first third of its annual cycle. As the LPL approaches its final regional battles to determine the last remaining seeds, the global field for the next major milestone is nearly set. This transition marks the end of isolated regional play and the beginning of the year's first true test of international strength.

First Stand 2026 is scheduled to commence on March 16, where G2 Esports will represent the LEC against the elite teams from every other major region. This international debut will serve as a critical assessment of the European scene's current standing within the broader global hierarchy.
