The ESL Snapdragon Pro Series: BGMI concluded on February 18 at the Noida Indoor Stadium in New Delhi after a little more than a month of intense action. It ended as one of the most successful events in the Snapdragon Pro Series and among BGMI competitions overall.
It has to be noted that BGMI — one of the biggest disciplines in a country whose competitive scene is dominated by mobile esports — returned in May 2023 after being banned by the Government of India for around ten months for security reasons. Hence, the anticipation for any upcoming tournament among fans is sky-high, and that was seen in this event as well.
The ESL Snapdragon Pro Series: BGMI hit 210.7K Peak Viewers during Round 18, the last map of the event. This final game on Day 3 of the Challenge Finals would decide who would go home as the winner, with one of the teams in the mix being Team SouL, a crowd favorite wherever it plays.
However, it was eliminated early in the last encounter to fall to second and allow Entity Gaming to emerge as the victor. During the finals, HW & AV metrics saw rises of 166% and 130%, respectively, compared to the last week of the Challenge Season, thanks to the sense of jeopardy regarding who would come out as the champion. Hence, it is fair to say that this final phase was crucial in helping the tournament hit the heights it did.
This BGMI competition was streamed on YouTube and Facebook, with the former's dominance in the South Asian streaming market clear here. The red platform continues to be the preferred choice for many esports watchers from this region and other parts of the continent, helping it tremendously in its eternal battle with Twitch for content space and coverage.
Moving to the Snapdragon Pro Series, this tournament finished third on the watch time and peak viewership charts. It became the series' most popular non-MLBB event during Round 2 of Week 1, Day 1, of the Challenge Season before moving a step up thanks to a thrilling finale at the end to crown the winner.
Even when looking at BGMI, it was the discipline's seventh most watched and popular event of all time, showing the appetite for it among ardent fans in the Indian subcontinent. However, there is still a lot to be done before this game reaches the heights that the likes of Free Fire and PUBG Mobile have when it comes to viewership figures.
Interestingly, there was some contentious news to come out of this tournament as pro gamer Robin revealed that the highly-followed esports organization, OREsports, would shut down operations. It has played the most events among those in the discipline and remains one of its most beloved sides.
Having finished fifth at the ESL Snapdragon Pro Series: BGM, OR's last act will be to participate at the iQOO India League 2024, which begins on February 22, so fans will be hoping their favorite side goes out on a high.
