Top esports events of October 2024: millions viewers for Worlds 2024 and new records for MPL leagues

In October, several major esports tournaments took place, drawing a large audience from Asia. Thanks to their activity on the streams, YouTube set a new record for the platform, surpassing 16 million concurrent viewers. The October tournaments also saw some impressive audience reach milestones, with new records set by the MPL Indonesia and MPL Philippines leagues for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Meanwhile, the Honor of Kings championship unexpectedly gained massive popularity among English-speaking viewers. The most popular esports tournament last month was, unsurprisingly, the 2024 World Championship. On October 27, T1 and Gen.G faced off in a Korean derby during the semifinals, drawing more than 4.97 million peak viewers. For Gen.G, this was a record-breaking audience, while T1 nearly hit 7 million peak views during their grand final against Bilibili Gaming in November. In fourth place was IEM Rio 2024, which gathered over 710,000 peak viewers during the grand final between Natus Vincere and MOUZ. Not only did it surpass last year’s event by 26%, but it also became one of the most-watched Counter-Strike tournaments ever held in Brazil. The most-watched match of the tournament was the group-stage game between Saigon Phantom and FPT x Flash, drawing over 571,600 viewers, even more than the grand final. While Arena of Glory Winter 2024 attracted a strong audience, it wasn’t a record-breaker, ranking as only the third most-watched event in the series' history. Arena of Glory Spring 2024 and Arena of Glory Winter 2022 both pulled in more viewers at their peaks. The 2024 World Championship also became the most popular esports event among English-speaking audiences. A big part of that success was thanks to British streamer Caedrel, who emerged as the most popular community caster of the tournament. In fact, his broadcasts from Worlds 2024 helped him set a new peak viewership record for his channel. In second place was IEM Rio 2024, with English-language broadcasts peaking at 294.8k viewers. This impressive number was largely driven by the official ESL channels on Twitch and YouTube. English-language streams of MPL Philippines Season 14 reached a peak of 275.5k viewers, making it the most-watched Mobile Legends event in the history of the Philippine league for this language. The viewership came from various official MPL and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang channels on YouTube. BLAST Premier: World Finals 2024 took the fourth spot with 167.8k peak viewers on its English-language broadcast, with the official BLAST Premier channels on Twitch and YouTube contributing the most to this result. The top esports channels for October were dominated by those covering the 2024 World Championship. British community caster Caedrel led the way with a peak audience of 372k viewers. Spanish streamer Ibai followed closely with 234k peak viewers tuning in to his broadcast. The official riotgames and otplol_ channels took the second and fifth spots, respectively. Interestingly, all of these channels hit their peak viewership during the same match — the semifinal showdown between T1 and Gen.G. The only channel in the top 5 that didn’t cover the 2024 World Championship was eslcs, which aired the official English-language broadcast of IEM Rio 2024. During the grand final, eslcs peaked at over 157.4k viewers, making it the most-watched channel among those covering the event.
