Apex Legends Global Series: 2022 Championship LAN tournament was held in the USA on July 7-10 with the best teams in the world competing for a share of $2 million prize pool. The championship was hosted by the PNC Arena in Raleigh, and the victory went to DarkZero Esports from Australia.

ALGS 2022 has become the largest tournament in the history of the discipline, but also the most controversial one in terms of organization. Long before the start of the first matches, Apex Legends fans had the impression that the participants of the world championship are going to compete not as much with the other teams, as with coronavirus tests and US embassies. Not everyone managed to pass these two "bosses" without losses.

Dozens of players were unable to attend the tournament because of the coronavirus and problems with visas. Many teams had to not only look for player replacements but even change the already found stand-ins. As a result, all of this has negatively affected the preparation for official matches.

Some e-athletes were tested positive for coronavirus already during the tournament. The organizers suspended these players, and their teams had to play with incomplete rosters. This especially affected the Japanese players from PULVEREX, DetonatioN Gaming, and FENNEL. A similar problem occurred with FOR7 from South Korea and 1iQ from Chile.

The Ukrainian Max-Strafe could not fly to the US because of the war, so he was replaced by the Swede maydeelol in the GMT Esports roster. On the very first day of the tournament, the stand-in tested positive for coronavirus and the American RamBeau had to play instead. The same happened with Ukrainian Artyco from FA Kitties.

The case of AYM Esports was rather interesting. This team was not supposed to play at the championship at all but at the last moment, it replaced Team Empire, which had problems with visas. Shortly before the event, one of the AYM players also experienced visa difficulties, and another participant tested positive for coronavirus on the final day. As a result, the team, which itself arrived to replace another participant, had to revamp its roster almost completely.

How many players ALGS Championship 2022 missed?

About 17 participants were tested positive for coronavirus in the ALGS 2022 and had to be replaced before or during the tournament. Another 13 players were unable to fly to the US due to visa issues. Two e-athletes didn't arrive because of the war in Ukraine. Five teams played with incomplete rosters (two players instead of three) due to the lack of players.

Viewership statistics

All of the above factors could not but affect the entertainment value of the tournament and the resulting attention of the audience.

ALGS Series: 2022 Championship viewership statistics

In total, ALGS 2022 broadcasts have generated 11.2M Hours Watched. Its matches attracted 632.3K Peak Viewers and 289.7K Average Viewers.

The most popular broadcast language was English (429K Peak Viewers), followed by Japanese (135.5K Peak Viewers). While the English-language broadcasts increased the viewership compared to the qualifying tournament of the series (+25.5%) there was a sharp decline when it came to the presence of Japanese viewers (-51.5%). One of the reasons for this is the broadcast schedule that was inconvenient for local audiences due to time zone differences.

The official Twitch channel of the discipline became the leader in terms of viewership, generating 3.4M Hours Watched and attracting 213K Peak Viewers. Community casters nicewigg (71K Peak Viewers) and iitztimmy (1.1M Hours Watched) also attracted a large number of spectators.

ALGS: 2022 Championship became the most-watched tournament in the history of Apex Legends. However, it could not beat the Split 2 Playoffs stage in terms of Peak Viewers. Coming third in terms of audience coverage is the Twitch Rivals show event.

Although the tournament has faced a lot of problems, it is impossible not to notice that the ALGS 2022 Championship has still become a real celebration of Apex Legends esports. The series emerged, perhaps, at the least convenient moment, right at the beginning of 2020, shortly before the start of the pandemic, which hit the entire industry hard. Considering the game's overall growing viewership statistics, there is no reason to doubt that things will only get better in the future.
