For the first time in two and a half years, a top Apex Legends tournament was held in a LAN format. ALGS: Split 2 Playoffs, where the world's best teams competed for a share of $1 million, ended on May 1 in Stockholm. An Australian team Reignite became the tournament's unexpected champion, and the tournament itself showed record viewership statistics within the discipline. Esports Charts has prepared for you a detailed article about the event and its the viewership statistics.

For three days the halls of the recently opened Scandinavian XPO turned into an arena of intense battles among 40 teams from different parts of the world. The event was divided into three stages: Group Stage, Bracket Stage, and Finals. In the first stage, all 40 teams were split into 4 groups: and only the top 20 teams made it to Finals, where they competed in seven rounds for the Apex Legends Global Series: Split 2 Playoffs championship and the main prize of $250K.

After the first day, it seemed that the tournament would be dominated by teams from Europe and America. However, rosters from the Asia-Pacific region showed that their first failures were a fortuitous accident, as they knocked out many distinguished European teams in the following day, including Acend, Invictus Gaming Int. and SCARZ

The trend continued in the second round of the lower bracket, as four teams from the Asia-Pacific region advanced to Finals. The most outstanding among them was the tournament's dark horse, Team Burgers, which took 4th place in the second round. One should also mention the impressive result of the Brazilian team Elevate, as it became the only representative of South America in the Top 20.

The intrigue of the final match and the entire tournament came down to the battles between Australian team Reignite and two American squads OpTic Gaming and Luminosity Gaming. In the end, the trio from Australia defeated all of its opponents and secured the first place in the tournament.

It is worth mentioning that Reignite had to play with a substitute, as Genburten was tested positive for coronavirus and did not play in the tournament (Jmw was a stand-in for the team). Unfortunately, that wasn't the only incident at the tournament: several other teams had to look for substitutes: for example, the European team GMT was unable to have a Ukrainian Maxim Stadnyuk in the line-up, as he could not leave the country due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Team Gambit, which played in the tournament under the neutral name “Players”, was in the same situation as well.

The tournament was full of spectacular battles, which were watched closely by a large audience. Despite the fact that the tournament lasted three days, its airtime was 33,5 hours. During that time, the broadcasts accumulated over 9.6 million Hours Watched, and English and Japanese broadcasts accounted for 86% of the total. The Peak Viewers number of 676K spectators was reached at the final round of Finals, where the outcome of the champion's title was determined. Twitch became the leader among the platforms, as it accounted for about 70% of HW total. At the same time YouTube accounted for 27%, and almost all of its broadcasts were in Japanese.

The official Apex Legends channel reached the highest number of Hours Watched among the channels, accumulating almost 2 million HW. Next comes the channel of an American pro gamer iitztimmy, whose streams amassed 1.1 million Hours Watched. The Japanese tournament operator Rage is in third place; its YouTube streams reached 845K Hours Watched.

It should be noted that the tournament achieved record numbers mainly due to being broadcast on more than 140 channels.

On the final day of the tournament, the tension and suspense were at the peak, which helped to keep a fairly solid number of viewers for a long time. The last five rounds made up the top most watched games by Peak Viewers of the entire event.

The LAN effect did its part and ALGS: Split 2 Playoffs became the absolute record holder by Hours Watched, almost tripling the number of Hours Watched accumulated by other tournaments in the discipline over the past three years. Also worth noting that ALGS: Split 2 Playoffs outpaced its closest pursuer, the Twitch Rivals Apex Legends Challenge streamer event, by 15% in terms of Peak Viewers.

The culmination of the Apex Legends professional season kicks off on July 7 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Apex Legends Champions 2022 will feature 30 teams, including the ALGS: Split 2 Playoffs champions. The remaining 10 teams will be determined by Last Chance Qualifiers.
