The group stage matches of The Bali Major 2023, the third international tournament of the Dota Pro Circuit series, concluded on July 3 in Indonesia. As of now, the tournament is significantly lagging behind its predecessors in Berlin and Lima in terms of key metrics: for example, it is trailing behind them by 26% and 36% respectively in total Hours Watched of the stage.

The Bali Major 2023 is the third and final major in the Dota Pro Circuit 2023 season. Additionally, it is the last tournament where teams can earn DPC ranking points to qualify for The International 2023. Like other majors, The Bali Major 2023 features 18 teams from 6 regional leagues of Dota 2.

Two teams from Western Europe showed the best results during the group stage. In Group A, Team Liquid proved to be the strongest, not losing a single series out of eight games, with four victories and four draws. In Group B, Quest Esports claimed the first spot, recording the highest number of wins among all participants in this stage (five victories).

The biggest disappointment of the stage was the performance of teams from Southeast Asia. After the group stage, three representatives from this region — Bleed Esports, Blacklist International, and Execration — were eliminated from the tournament.

Viewership Statistics of The Bali Major 2023 Group Stage

Overall, the group stage matches of The Bali Major 2023  accumulated 8.1 million Hours Watched. The Average Viewers number during the tournament broadcasts reached 144.1K, with the Peak Viewers number reaching 255.8K people: this result was reached on the fourth day of the group stage when multiple matches were taking place concurrently.

The most popular series of the stage was the match between Gaimin Gladiators and Quest Esports, with approximately 214.8K Peak Viewers watching it. It is worth noting that both teams represent the Western European region in the tournament.

Viewership Statistics of The Bali Major 2023 Group Stage

If we compare The Bali Major with the previous major in Berlin, there is a noticeable decline in all key metrics. The total Hours Watched during the group stage decreased by 26%, the average viewership dropped by 27%, and the peak viewership decreased by 21%. The only metric that increased was the Peak Viewers number on the Spanish-language broadcast.

The main reason for the overall viewership decline of the event is the inconvenient time zones. The matches of The Bali Major start very early for viewers from Europe, causing them to miss a significant portion of the matches. One should remember that Europe remains the main region for the professional Dota 2 scene, both in terms of results and viewership activity.

Another reason is the decrease in suspense. The Bali Major awards more DPC ranking points than previous tournaments, however, even before it started, the holders of 8 out of 12 invites to The International 2023 became known. Currently, only five participating teams in The Bali Major are directly competing for points to secure an invitation to The International 2023. Other teams have either already received invites or won't be able to contend for them even if they become champions at the major.
