Elevate makes history at Call of Duty Mobile World Championship 2024

The Call of Duty Mobile World Championship 2024 was held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, from October 4 to 6. Part of the DreamHack Atlanta gaming festival, it was the least-performing of the three singular global championships held so far, with the falling away of favorites in the latter stages contributing to this decline.

The statistics in the article do not take into account the metrics from Chinese streaming platforms, which use a different method for calculating online audience activity compared to the "concurrent viewers" metric.

The most coveted competition of the 2024 Call of Duty Mobile competitive season had a prize money of $1,000,000 on offer. It witnessed the world's 16 best teams duking it out for the ultimate glory after qualifying through various tournaments in the Snapdragon Pro Series competitive circuit that spanned North America, Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

After three days of intense battle royale action, Elevate beat Qing Jiu Club 4:0 in the Grand Final to emerge as the game's new world champion. The tournament winner — the first team from The Philippines and the Garena (Southeast Asian) region to win a world title — took home $400,000 as winnings, with the runner-up pocketing $170,000.

It has to be noted that a previous Filipino side, Blacklist International Ultimate, had won the Call of Duty Mobile World Championship 2021 East Finals. However, this was more of an event involving sides from Asia due to the cancelation of the global competition because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so it doesn't count as an international title.

The COD:M WC 2024 recorded 31K Peak Viewers during the Playoffs Semifinals between Galorys and Elevate, which the latter won 3:0. It was a clash between two top teams from the East and West, with the former's victory continuing the former's recent dominance over its counterparts.

The summit clash was the second-most popular match, with the eventual winner emerging as a worthy champion after not losing a single game throughout. Seemingly, just like last year, the lack of representation for the Western region in the title decider seemed to have put off its audiences.

Call of Duty Mobile World Championship 2024– most popular teams

There was very little to split the most popular teams, with first to fifth separated by around 1,600 viewers. Their combined performances did help this Call of Duty: Mobile tournament register 431.2K Hours Watched and 17.5K Average Viewers over 25 hours of airtime.

All these metrics were down from the Call of Duty Mobile World Championship 2023, which ended as the discipline's most-watched event ever. This happened despite more channels covering the 2024 iteration than last year, which also meant it got coverage on more live-streaming services.

One reason was that many of the prominent teams, also the favorites to win the entire affair, were unable to make it into the last few rounds. The likes of Luminosity, GodLike Esports, Wolves, and Stalwart Esports stumbled at the first hurdle in the Playoffs, with inaugural world champion Tribe Gaming not even making it out of the Swiss Stage after finishing a disappointing tenth on the table.

Nevertheless, thanks to the runs of Galorys to the Semifinals, Portuguese witnessed a jump of almost 10% in its overall watch time. What helped the language was the fact that Galorys' content creator Japa Tamashiro covered most of its action, emerging as the second-most watched and the second-most popular streamer.

With Western audiences losing interest before the last four, English and Twitch saw their shares fall, with TikTok taking advantage of Asian teams' dominance to emerge as the second-most preferred platform. YouTube remained the dominant name, backed by prominent influencers like iFerg - Live and GamerFleet.

As mentioned before, the COD:M WC 24 put up the lowest audience numbers of the three editions held so far. However, when looking at tournaments involving competitive players, all three iterations remain among the most-watched in the game's fledgling history.

ESL Faceit Group and Activision continue to put up some fun events and solid numbers in the COD Mobile esports scene. However, it remains a game where the big teams need to do well to attract more viewers, so what they do to address this aspect next season will be interesting.
