Call of Duty series has a large number of loyal fans around the world. Each release of the new shooter from this franchise attracts the attention of millions of users. However, the excitement around Call of Duty: Black Ops IV cannot be compared with anything, as the developers decided to change the game significantly by adding a completely new multiplayer mode for the series — Blackout, in a simple way — Battle Royale.

One of the key reasons for the success of the Battle Royale genre is its great popularity among streamers and viewers. That is why it is quite sensible to judge about the popularity of Call of Duty: Black Ops IV by the number of streamers and spectators on the most popular streaming platform in the world — Twitch.tv.

It is curious that the peak number of viewers of Call of Duty: Black Ops IV was not on the release on October 12 but on the first day of the Blackout open beta test on September 14. There were 607.657 viewers at the peak. The maximum amount of viewers after the full release is 471.615 people.

I decided to compare the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops IV with the release of another popular game on Twitch — World of Warcraft, which received new addon Battle for Azeroth recently. This addon became the most successful in the history of the most famous MMORPG in the world, that is why the comparison of these two games is more than appropriate.

The peak amount of viewers of World of Warcraft after the release of Battle for Azeroth was 602.068 people, after that their amount dropped 2.5 times the very next day. Yes, CoD totaled fewer people at the peak at the release, but it keeps the audience better than WoW. Moreover, World of Warcraft couldn't dominate over Fortnite for more than one day while Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 competes on equal terms with Fortnite at least for now. However, the situation may change in several days or even hours.

Developers from Treyarch created an excellent game which can involve a inspire a huge amount of players. Nevertheless, it is not enough to become the of Twitch. Epic Games made a great job with streamers and their marketing strategy. If Activision wants to challenge Fortnite, the company has a lot more to do.
