ESL One Berlin Major 2023 Group Stage draws nearly 20% fewer viewers than The Lima Major 2023
The first matches of ESL One Berlin Major 2023 playoffs (Dota 2) kicked off on May 1. Team Gaimin Gladiators already managed to knock out Team Spirit to the lower bracket, and is on its way to winning the second Major in a row this season. Whether or not that will happen is too early to tell, but we can sum up some intermediate viewership totals of the tournament now. Esports Charts has compared ESL One Berlin Major 2023 to The Lima Major 2023 to see which tournament's Group Stage drew the most viewers.
ESL One Berlin Major 2023 has not yet had any surprises for viewers in terms of results. In the Group Stage of the tournament, Western European teams dominated as usual, with all of them making it to the upper bracket of the playoffs. Southeast Asian teams performed less successfully, with two teams from the region leaving the tournament. It is interesting that for the second Major in a row, BetBoom Team could not make it out of the Group Stage, which, however, did not prevent the Russian team from participating in the most popular match of the stage again.

ESL One Berlin Major's and The Lima Major 2023's Group Stages comparison
Comparing the first two Majors of the current season, ESL One Berlin Major 2023 lags behind The Lima Major 2023 by all key metrics. The difference in total Hours Watched is over 14% (and the tournament in Peru did not even have a tiebreaker). The lag in Average and Peak Viewers is about 19% for each metric.
The Berlin Major showed a strong drawback in terms of Peak Viewers on the Russian and Spanish broadcasts. But the English-language broadcasts increased by as much as 32% compared to the tournament in South America. There are several reasons for this difference. First, the change in the coverage studio played a big role. While Epulze was the main tournament operator for The Lima Major, ESL One Berlin Major 2023 was covered in English by a much more experienced and recognizable ESL company.
Second, the tournament in Germany has a more convenient schedule for European/English-speaking viewers than it was during The Lima Major 2023. In Peru, the matches started a few hours later and ended late at night. On the other hand, the current schedule cannot be called convenient for South America, due to which the Spanish language has declined by almost 42%. A big part of that was also due to the poor performance of the Peruvian teams in the Group Stage: beastcoast had already left the tournament, and Evil Geniuses barely managed to cling to the lower bracket of the playoffs thanks to tiebreakers.
The ESL One Berlin Major 2023 playoffs will take place from May 1-7. You can follow the tournament on the coverage page.
