The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) has officially unveiled the shortlist for the 46th Sports Emmy Awards, with esports being featured in the Outstanding Esports Championship Coverage category. Among the nominees are ESL's IEM Cologne 2024 and Activision's Call of Duty League 2024 Championship, both vying for the prestigious award.
Nominees for Outstanding Esports Championship Coverage:
-
Call of Duty League 2024 Playoffs (Call of Duty)
-
The International 2024 (Dota 2)
-
IEM Cologne 2024 (Counter-Strike)
-
Worlds 2024 (League of Legends)
-
VALORANT Champions 2024 (Valorant)
Out of the five nominated esports events, four are international tournaments, showcasing the global appeal of esports. The only exception is the Call of Duty League, which primarily targets a North American audience. Each of these international events generated over a million peak viewers (excluding Chinese streaming platforms), underlining the ever-growing popularity of global esports tournaments.
Worlds 2024 final, held in London at the O2 Arena, set a significant milestone by becoming the most-watched esports tournament outside of China, with the finals attracting a peak of over 6.8 million concurrent viewers, a record for esports viewership on global streaming platforms.
Since 2020, the Sports Emmy Awards have acknowledged the rising influence of esports, with previous nominees including the Call of Duty League, IEM Cologne, Worlds, Valorant Masters, and the BLAST.tv Paris Major. Last year, the League of Legends World Championship took home the win in the category.
This year's awards ceremony will be held at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City on Tuesday, May 20. The event will honor winners across 47 categories, with Roy Wood Jr. as the host. The ceremony will be streamed live on The Emmys website and apps.
