Tokyo hosted the EVO Japan 2024 championship in late April, where the world's top players competed across various popular fighting game disciplines. The event underscored the genre's increasing popularity, notably with the release of new iterations in franchises such as Street Fighter and Tekken.

The standout tournament of EVO Japan 2024 was the Street Fighter 6 competition, attracting over 255.7K Peak Viewers during the finals. This set a new record for viewership in the history of the Japanese EVO series and ranked third overall for the game, trailing only EVO 2023 Street Fighter 6 and Capcom Cup X. Street Fighter has long been a staple of fighting game tournaments, and with the release of its sixth installment in June 2023, interest in the discipline has only surged.

The final showdown of EVO Japan 2024's Tekken 8 tournament drew a simultaneous audience of 168.6K viewers. By contrast, last year's Tekken 7 tournament peaked at only 100.5K PV. Tekken 8 at EVO Japan 2024 emerged as the most popular Tekken tournament ever held in Japan. Notably, Tekken tournaments in the USA usually draw significantly larger audiences than those in Japan. The current record for the discipline was set during EVO 2022, with a 250.5K PV.

EVO Japan 2024's Guilty Gear tournament also yielded remarkable results, drawing in more than 130.1K PV simultaneously. This feat marked a record-breaking event among all tournaments held in Japan, second only to the American EVO 2022 and EVO 2023 in terms of viewership for the discipline.

EVO Japan 2024 hosted a total of 16 fighting game tournaments. Alongside the ones mentioned earlier, there were competitions for titles such as Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, The King of Fighters XV, Under Night In-Birth II [Sys:Celes], and more. While Japanese participants dominated in terms of victories, there were also winners from other countries. For example, MenaRD from the Dominican Republic clinched the championship title in the Street Fighter 6 tournament, while TempestNYC from the United States claimed the top spot in the Guilty Gear -STRIVE- tournament.

While Japan's numbers have been impressive, they may be overshadowed by the upcoming EVO 2024 in the USA. Scheduled for July 19th to 21st in Las Vegas, this event is anticipated to draw significant attention. Initially, tournaments for eight fighting games are planned, including Mortal Kombat 1.
