Glitch: Infinite, the anniversary Super Smash Bros. tournament organized by VGBootCamp, took place from February 18-21. Eight of the world's best players competed for $9.24K in LAN single-format tournaments and eight duos competed for a share of $780. The total number of participants exceeded 600. In a new Esports Charts article we'll tell you whether Glitch: Infinite's anniversary event outpaced previous tournaments in terms of viewership, and name the most popular players of the event.

The Glitch tournament series started in 2016 as a regional competition that continues to be held at Xanadu Games, a video game store in Laurel, Maryland, USA. The championship was originally the Super Smash Bros. tournament for Wii U, and moved to a new installment of the fighting game after the release of Ultimate. The tournament became international after Glitch 6, resulting in more participants and increasing the prestige of the competition.

The organizers of the event are Video Game Boot Camp, a production company founded by pro-gamers GimR and Aposl in 2009. VGBootCamp aims to develop and enhance the fighting game community: in addition to Smash games tournaments, VGBC organizes weekly Street Fighter V, Rivals of Aether, and other fighting games competitions at the Xanadu Games store.

Glitch events usually focus on a particular franchise or a game featured in Super Smash Bros. For example, the previous Glitch 8.5 focused on characters from Konami's Metal Gear and Castlevania franchises. Glitch: Infinite had only characters from Nintendo's fighting games available.

Cosmos, who represents beastcoast, became the champion of the anniversary event in singles. LeoN and Zomba won the duos. It should be noted that Zomba also took second place in the singles competition.

Glitch: Infinite event accumulated 826K Hours Watched and drew 23.6K Average Viewers. It is interesting that not a single match from the final stage made it into the top 5 of the most popular matches of the event. The Peak Viewers number was reached during the match Goblin vs. Vendetta and amounted to 70.7K spectators. It is worth mentioning that Vendetta took 7-8th place in the tournament.

Glitch: Infinite was covered no only on VGBootCamp channels, but also by official Twitch casters of the event. The list included Hungryboxetoiles, as well as moistcr1tikal, who became the most popular one with 13.8K Peak Viewers.

The most watched player of Glitch: Infinite is Cosmos, who accumulated 92.7K Hours Watched during his way to the championship. However, he didn't make it into the top five most popular tournament participants: Goblin became the leader in Average Viewers attracting 66.5K spectators, while Kola, Vendetta and Tide also had over 60K Average Viewers.

Glitch: Infinite showed quite decent metric results compared with the previous tournaments in the series, but it did not become the leader in any of them. The top event by Hours Watched (889.9K HW) and Peak Viewers (84.75K PV) is Glitch 8.5 Konami Code, which ranked third in the SBB Championships in 2021. And the highest Average Viewers number remains with Glitch 6, which was the first international tournament of the Ultimate Series.

We can certainly say that the SSB esports scene is going to take a big step forward in the near future. If previously the event organizers were enthusiasts and third-party tournament operators, soon it will be the publisher itself. Nintendo and Panda Global plan to launch the first official Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Super Smash Bros Melee tournament system in North America in 2022 as part of their partnership. It should be noted that a major Smash Ultimate Summit 4's SSBU tournament will be held from March 3-6, with a prize pool of $149K.
