LEC 2026 shake-up: New format, Los Ratones’ big debut, and a fresh era for European League of Legends
Big news for League of Legends fans! The LEC has announced a brand-new competitive format for the 2026 season. Instead of the usual Winter Split, the league will host a special tournament featuring the top EMEA Masters teams. The organizers have already confirmed that one of the invites will go to Los Ratones — a streamer squad founded by popular community caster Marc Robert “Caedrel” Lamont.

The LEC revealed the new format in a short video posted on the league’s official X (formerly Twitter) page. Here are some key highlights:
-
The Winter Season will be replaced by a new event, the LEC Versus, a tournament that will feature all ten LEC teams along with two invited squads representing the top EMEA Masters contenders.
-
All teams in the LEC Versus will first compete in a best-of-one round-robin stage. The top eight teams will then advance to a double-elimination playoff bracket to fight for the championship.
-
The grand final will be played in a best-of-five series. The winner will earn a spot at First Stand 2026, where they’ll represent the European region.
-
The Spring and Summer splits will follow a similar structure but won’t include guest teams. The top two teams from the Spring Split will qualify for the Mid-Season Invitational, while the top three from the Summer Split will earn spots at the World Championship.
Overall, the organizers reaffirmed their goal of strengthening the connection between the LEC and EMEA ecosystems. They also hinted that the two systems could become even more closely integrated in the future.
Previously, we examined LEC viewership trends in 2024 and 2025 in detail. This year, the numbers have dipped slightly, although not significantly. The new format is expected to turn that around and give fans a fresh reason to tune in. And there’s no doubt viewers will be thrilled to see Los Ratones make their cameo in the European franchise league.
