LEC Spring 2024 opens to high viewership driven by Karmine Corp

LEC Spring 2024 opens to high viewership driven by Karmine Corp

League of Legends returns to Europe with its LEC Spring 2024 season on March 9. The regional league will continue throughout March, with the playoff stage beginning on March 30 and continuing into mid-April. Viewership for League of Legends is complicated; although the prestigious world championship tournament continues to reach new heights, certain established regional leagues are struggling to retain viewership.

The LEC’s answer to this decline in viewership over the past couple of years has come in the form of mixing the live-streaming and esports community. Spanish streamer ibai and French creator Kamet0 created their own esports organisations in recent years, and now these streamer-led teams are driving the viewership for the European League of Legends regional circuit.

In this article, we will look at the overall statistics for the league, which matches draw the most viewers, and which broadcasters are bringing the most viewers to the league.

The first week of matches for the LEC garnered 3.77M Hours Watched across three days. Each day 5 matches are played, featuring all 10 teams of the league. The entrance of Karmine Corp and the collaboration between the competitively successful MAD Lions team and wildly popular KOI have breathed new life into the LEC. The LEC Winter 2024 was one of the most popular LEC splits in years thanks to the entrance of these teams, and viewership remains strong going into the second split of the year.

In comparison to the previous year, the average viewership for the LEC Spring 2024 has grown by 31.2%. The Hours Watched, or watch time, metrics for the two splits seem similar, but this is because the Spring 2024 split was live for much fewer hours. There was no considerable difference in the average length of the matches played for each split, so this discrepancy comes down to the broadcasters and event organisers reducing downtime between matches.

The LEC Spring 2024 season reached 444.5K Peak Viewers for the match between Fnatic and Karmine Corp on Day 2 of Week 1. Although this does make the LEC Spring 2024 one of the most popular esports tournaments of 2024, it cannot compare to the viewership achieved by the LEC Winter 2024 in its first week. The Winter Split of the LEC garnered 741.5K Peak Viewers for its first week of matches, and this was largely thanks to French and Spanish-speaking audiences.

Compared to the Spring 2023 split, the French and Spanish-speaking communities have experienced a renaissance. The two demographics were previously popular and two of the largest audiences for the LEC, but the entrance of Karmine Corp and the new MAD Lions KOI team have brought these audiences to the forefront of League of Legends viewership.

It is worth noting that French and Spanish viewership has calmed down since the Winter 2024 split. During this time, French and Spanish-language broadcasts were more popular than English-language ones, and they generated a vast majority of the hype wave behind the Winter 2024 success. English is the most popular broadcast language for Week 1 of the LEC Spring 2024. Spanish and French have fallen slightly behind, although still contributing viewership similar to the English-language broadcasts at peak.

Karmine Corp is undoubtedly the heart of the LEC’s viewership at the moment. The French organisation was present in all 3 of the week’s most popular matches, and they received stronger viewership than both G2 Esports and Fnatic, who are historically two of the LEC’s strongest and most popular teams.

G2 Esports currently leads the LEC’s table with a flawless 3-0 record. The organisation is the most successful League of Legends team in Europe, and their matches were highly watched as fans benchmarked other teams against G2’s strength.

MAD Lions KOI received strong viewership for each of their matches, largely thanks to ibai’s community casting. MAD Lions is a Spanish esports organisation that has 3 LEC titles under their belt, and KOI is an esports organisation founded by current live-streaming sensation and former LVP caster ibai.

The combination of esports and live-streaming popularity has driven MAD Lions KOI to the top of Spanish viewership in the LEC, and although they did not feature in these top 3 matches, expect to see them recording strong Peak Viewers metrics in the upcoming weeks of competition.

Ibai was by far the most popular broadcaster to stream the opening week of matches, and he received 140.4K Peak Viewers for his community casting broadcast of the MAD Lions KOI match against G2 Esports. Although the Spanish organisation was unable to dethrone G2 Esports, the strong opening week viewership is a good starting point for this Split of the LEC.

Kamet0, another community caster, was the second most popular broadcaster of the opening week with 107.3K Peak Viewers. The French content creator was supporting his own team, Karmine Corp, in their match against GIANTX, when he reached his peak viewership. The match became the second most popular game of the week, thanks to the combination of Kamet’s French viewership the GIANTX’s Spanish following.

Finally, otplol_ finished out our podium places for this ranking. The broadcaster is the official French broadcasting partner for the LEC and other regional leagues. Although French-language broadcasts are becoming an integral part of the LEC, otplol_’s most popular broadcast of the week did not feature any French teams. The organisation reached 67.1K Peak Viewers for their coverage of Fnatic’s match against Team Heretics, a Spanish organisation, on Day 3 of the week.

The LEC received lower viewership for its Spring 2024 opening week compared to the opening week of the previous split, Winter 2024. Viewership from Spanish and French-speaking audiences has calmed down slightly, but these two demographics remain critical for the LEC’s viewership. These two demographics show a passion for the game and do not only support local teams, as seen in otplol_’s peak viewership being achieved outside of matches with French teams.

Esports Charts will continue to follow the viewership of the LEC Spring 2024 as it continues, as well as other regional leagues for League of Legends, and other esports disciplines, from around the world.
