No Los Ratones, no party? LEC Spring 2026 opening weekend viewership takes a hit

No Los Ratones, no party? LEC Spring 2026 opening weekend viewership takes a hit

Mar 30, 2026 3 min read

The LEC 2026 Spring has kicked off, launching the race for spots at the summer international League of Legends events. However, the opening weekend brought more than just action on the Rift. While the competition delivered its share of surprises (including Fnatic, one of the title favorites, starting 0:2), the broadcasts themselves showed worrying signs, with viewership dropping significantly compared to both the Winter-2026 and Spring-2025 opening weekends.

Five matches took place during the opening weekend, setting the early tone for the split. GIANTXKarmine CorpNatus Vincere and Team Heretics all secured wins, while Fnatic stumbled out of the gate despite reinforcing their coaching staff during the break. Losses to GIANTX and Movistar KOI leave one of the pre-split favorites in an early hole, even if playoff implications remain distant at this stage.

However, the story of the weekend extended beyond in-game results. The opening schedule notably excluded G2 Esports and Shifters, two teams capable of driving significant audience interest. G2’s absence in particular — as one of the league’s primary viewership engines — contributed to the overall decline, though it only partially explains the broader trend.

In that vacuum, the matchup between Team Vitality and Karmine Corp emerged as the weekend’s flagship series. Vitality staged a reverse comeback from 0:1, with the second map stretching beyond 52 minutes, the longest game of the weekend. The series peaked at 272,000 viewers, setting the high-water mark for the opening days

Fnatic, despite their 0:2 start, remained a strong draw, with their matches ranking second and third by peak viewership at 208,000-225,000 concurrent viewers.

What caused the LEC Spring 2026 viewership decline?

Even so, the broader metrics point to a clear decline. Compared to the 2025 Spring Split opening week, both Average Viewers and Peak Viewers dropped by 26% to 31%. While last year’s start was boosted by a high-profile G2 vs. KOI clash, that factor alone does not account for the scale of the decline — the average audience this weekend fell below any single day from the first week of Spring 2025.

The contrast becomes even sharper when measured against the 2026 Winter Split. Although Spring traditionally trails Winter due to the loss of early-season hype, the current 42% to 43% drop in key metrics is unusually steep. A major differentiator is the absence of Los Ratones, whose presence earlier in the year significantly boosted engagement. Without them — and with G2 yet to enter the rotation — the league is struggling to maintain that momentum.

The opening week concludes today with NAVI facing SK Gaming and Team Heretics taking on Vitality. Viewership is likely to rebound once G2 Esports joins the schedule, but the more pressing question is whether the LEC can offset the loss of the Los Ratones audience over the course of the split, rather than relying on periodic spikes tied to specific teams.
