Most popular esports tournaments in March 2024

After taking a back seat to the League of Legends and assorted tactical shooters in February, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang came back with a bang to top the next month's rankings. A major factor for this return to form was the start of the various regional leagues, with one name continuing to stand out, as seen below.

The data does not consider the statistics of Chinese live-streaming platforms due to the unreliability of the public metrics provided.

The likes of Valorant and Counter-Strike 2 also continued to hog the limelight thanks to the action seen in major events like the VCT 2024: Masters Madrid and the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024. Special mention must go to Overwatch's popularity in South Korea, with one of its competitions ending as one of the most popular among Korean-speaking audiences.

Atop the pile is the discipline's crown jewel when it comes to its regional events, the MPL Indonesia Season 13, which continued to make news as the year's most popular esports tournament so far. In fact, it has improved on the initial figure (topping at 1.86M PV during the Week 4 clash between Alter Ego and RRQ Hoshi) to reiterate how big a market Indonesia remains to the game and its esports segment. With the top two heading to the brand-new Mid Season Cup, whose first iteration carries $3,000,000 as the prize pool — the highest ever in MLBB and the first one to feature a seven-figure prize pool — readers can expect lots more action, meaning a lot more viewers showing up in the latter stages.

Next is the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024, which also created several records to allay any fears of the discipline seeing any sort of decline after its move to the new game, CS2. Fittingly, it was the game's most recognizable side, Natus Vincere, who clinched the first Major trophy in the CS2 era after sneaking past FaZe Clan in the Grand Final. This game hit 1.85M PV, making it the third most popular event ever in Counter-Strike.

The VCT 2024: Masters Madrid comes in third having made headlines as the discipline's most popular competition of all time. With the Grand Final between Sentinels and Gen.G going all the way to the fifth map, the former's triumph — its first international LAN win in almost three years — played a crucial role. With new regions and teams emerging to challenge the established elite, there could be another golden age for Valorant coming up, which is only good news for fans of one of the most well-run esports segments globally.

Fourth is the LCK Spring 2024, which also made the podium of last month's list. The clash between T1 and Gen.G on Week 7 hit 1.04M PV, while their first-day clash in January drew over 1.1M PV, marking a milestone for the best Group Stage result in LoL esports history across all regional leagues. With the ongoing Playoffs ending on April 7, there is every chance readers see this competition appear in the April rankings.

Rounding off the top five is another Valorant tournament, the VCT 2024: Americas Kickoff, which registered 823K PV during the Grand Final between cross-Americas rivals Sentinels and LOUD. Their clashes, and the former's victory in the summit clash, ensured this event became the most popular regional event ever in the discipline.

Among English viewers, too, four of the competitions mentioned above retain their places here. At the summit is the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024, which achieved 1.03M PV during the Grand Final between NAVI and FaZe.

Second is the VCT 2024: Masters Madrid, which notched 947.6K PV during the title decider, where Sentinels clinched a fourth straight title in B-Tier and above tournaments. The VCT 2024: Americas Kickoff is third, with the North American esports organization once again standing on top of the podium after a 3:2 win against LOUD in the summit clash. However, the most popular game among English audiences was during the victors' all-American Semifinals encounter against NRG Esports.

Next is the LCS Spring 2024 which was able to garner 208.6K PV from the Grand Final between Team Liquid and FlyQuest, with the former emerging as the victor after a 3:1 scoreline. LCK Spring 2024 is last after peaking at 208.6K English viewers during the March 9 clash between powerhouse rivals T1 and Gen.G.

Atop the pile when it comes to popularity among Korean viewers is the LCK Spring 2024 with 494.2K PV during the Grand Final. Following it is the VCT 2024: Masters Madrid that captured the attention of 74.2K PV when the summit clash was running, with viewers in the Far East interested in seeing whether Sentinels would end its drought or Gen.G would make South Korea proud by going all the way and creating history as one of the handful of Valorant international LAN tournament winners.

The CK CL Spring 2024 is third with almost 22K PV among Korean audiences, with the majority of them coming to see Rekkles' debut for T1. Another LoL tournament, LPL Spring 2024, is fifth, with Korean and Japanese audiences regularly tuning in to this league to see which Chinese side is doing well.

Then comes the Overwatch Champions Series 2024 - Stage 1 Korea, with the tournament proving that the discipline retains its following in the Asian nation. While Overwatch itself has become a niche sport over the past few years, the Overwatch World Cup 2023 showed there is still life in the old dog in terms of pulling audiences, as long as the cards are played right.

Like the previous month, more than half of this top-five leaderboard is filled with community casters, with the two popular FPS segments taking up all the slots. First up is the official Twitch PGL channel that live broadcast the Copenhagen Major, with the tournament proving that fans and critics can never write off the discipline irrespective of happenings outside its legendary maps.

Two more popular names in the Counter-Strike streaming circle — Gaules and ohnePixel — take up the third and fifth spots. Both streamed the first Major in the CS2 era, with the Brazilian platform megastar facing troubles ahead of the main event before eventually being allowed to co-cast his favorite esport and proving his worth yet again.

The other two names come from Valorant, with Sentinels' tarik covering all his teams' matches across multiple tournaments and playing a significant role in the record set at the VCT 2024: Masters Madrid. The official Valorant channel rounds off these standings, with the game getting off to a terrific start this year across tiers and regions.
