The Overwatch League 2023 Midseason Madness ended on June 18 at the Korea International Exhibition Center in Goyang, South Korea, with Atlanta Reign thumping Houston Outlaws 4-1 in the Grand Final to emerge victorious. Among the major Overwatch events held this year, it was the second most popular and watched, continuing a fluctuating trend for viewership numbers for the competition.

Atlanta Reign's win helped it pocket $500K of the $1.08M prize pool, with Houston Outlaws taking home $200K for its efforts. The two also met in the Upper Bracket Final, with Atlanta Reign edging a much closer contest 3-2 to make the Grand Final, while Houston Outlaws went down to the Lower Bracket Final, where it beat Florida Mayhem 3-1 to book a berth in the title decider.

The Overwatch League 2023 Midseason Madness recorded 84.9K Peak Viewers during the Day 2 Upper Bracket Final clash between Houston Outlaws and Atlanta Reign. The two were also part of the next most popular game — their Grand Final encounter — with this being the only entry from the two matches held on the final day.

The losing finalist had three appearances on the list of most popular matches, while the tournament winner and Seoul Infernal had two entries each. The tournament also registered 1.3M Hours Watched and 61.5K Average Viewers over a broadcast time of 22 hours and five minutes.

Most popular sides at the Overwatch League 2023 Midseason Madness

There were also two sides that batted for the label of most popular at this Overwatch League event, with one of them taking the top spot after edging this battle by 4.7%. When it came to watch hours, by virtue of playing more games than any other team, one organization was in the number position by a mile.

One of the Asian sides finished rock bottom in the actual championship, the hours watched table, and the average online viewers' leaderboard, with the latter two happening despite boasting a lot of home players. Of course, it didn’t help that the side had the fewest airtime among the six sides after playing only two games and losing both to head home much earlier than expected.

Language break-up at the Overwatch League 2023 Midseason Madness

When looking at languages, English was the dominant one, with Korean the only other language to make a mark thanks to the participation of two Asian sides representing the East region. Also helping was that 80% of the esports athletes taking part in Goyang were from South Korea, giving it a strong home feel and drawing more partisan fans in.

However, it was not a good time for fans of this side of the series, as they finished as the bottom two teams in this mid-season competition. It was a similar case last year, where teams from the East mostly ended in the middle of the table, with only the fourth-placed Philadelphia Fusion (now Seoul Infernal) making it into the top four.

Looking at the four big events held in the OWL 2023 calendar so far, there is one clear winner, the Overwatch League 2023 - Spring Stage Qualifiers, which is the only one to cross 3M HW and 100K PV. In fact, it has done 241.4% better than the next-best tournament (Overwatch League 2023 - Spring Stage Knockouts) in terms of the former metric and 39.2% more in the latter.

What made a significant difference to the viewership numbers of these events was the availability of rewards for viewers when watching the action live. For example, the Spring Stage Qualifiers saw audiences earn League Tokens from the first week, helping it attract more watchers, while the Spring Stage Knockouts only had skins for Genji and Orisa, meaning fans did not tune in as much.

There were also viewership rewards at the Midseason Madness, which is what helped it become the second most popular event in the league this year. Viewers could earn in-game cosmetics, name cards, League Tokens, and — in a first-time-ever offering — Battle Pass tier skips. There were also extra perks for fans attending this event live in Seoul, making it an extra special affair.

All of this also helped the 2023 version become more popular than the Overwatch League 2022 Midseason Madness. It did 20.6% better in terms of peak concurrent viewers and 62.9% higher when looking at average online watchers, although there was a big gulf in favor of last year’s tournament in terms of watch hours, since it had double the number of sides overall and from each region, including popular names like San Francisco Shock, Los Angeles Gladiators, Dallas Fuel, and Seoul Dynasty.

The league now goes on a short break before the summer events take over and Blizzard Entertainment will want to make changes that will help it become a little less volatile in terms of viewership stats. For now, it can rest happy knowing that the spring segment ended on a pretty successful note.
