Overwatch League 2023 Playoffs concurrent viewership halved compared to last year
On October 1, the matches of the Overwatch League 2023 Playoffs ended in Toronto, the last stage of the current season. The Overwatch League 2023 Playoffs is the final stage of the 2023 OWL season. The eight best teams of the league took part in it: five representatives of the Western Division and three teams from the Eastern Division. After the group stage, Hangzhou Spark, Houston Outlaws, Florida Mayhem, and Boston Uprising reached the single-elimination playoffs bracket. In the championship match, the Florida Mayhem defeated the Houston Outlaws 4-0 to earn $1,000,000. The silver medalist received $400,000.
Overwatch League 2023 Playoffs Viewership Statistics

The Overwatch League 2023 Playoffs matches received 2.5 million Hours Watched, with 94.9K Average Viewers. The most popular match of the tournament was the series between the Boston Uprising and the Florida Mayhem in the first round of the playoffs, with 157.6K Peak Viewers. During the grand final, the peak viewership was unexpectedly lower and amounted to just 141.8K concurrent viewers.
The most watched team of the tournament was the Boston Uprising, which was slightly ahead of the Houston Outlaws in terms of total hours of watch time. Note that these teams played the most matches in the tournament since they had to play a decider series in the groups. Both teams also had famous players who had already won league finals in the past (some even twice).
Overwatch League 2023 Playoffs matches were exclusively covered on YouTube and only on the league's official broadcast channels. The vast majority of watch time was generated by English-language broadcasts, although the majority of teams consisted of representatives of South Korea.

Playoffs stage comparison on OWL Seasons
Overall, the Overwatch League 2023 Playoffs showed the best results of the season by concurrent viewers, but these numbers look rather modest compared to other disciplines. Overwatch League 2022 Playoffs had twice as much peak online last year (yes, thanks to the release of Overwatch 2).
As we already wrote in one of our previous materials, the league needs a complete reboot, including not only updating the season format but also changing the league's philosophy followed by Activision Blizzard. Now the league has a lot of problems and last season could be its last. OWL viewership is falling, Blizzard has not found a new distributor in China, some teams have already announced their departure from the franchise, and others are still discussing this option. And that's not all. The future of the league can only be discussed after a general vote of the teams, which should take place soon.
