After Spring success, Alter Ego Ares wins PMSL Southeast Asia Fall 2023 to throw down the marker

Aug 31, 2023 4 min read

The PUBG Mobile Super League - Southeast Asia Fall 2023, just its second edition after a string of changes in PUBG Mobile’s esports structure for 2023, was held in Malaysia, from August 2 to August 27. Like its inaugural cousin, it ended as one of the most-watched events in the discipline's history and the third-most viewed one this year.

After around three weeks of action in the Group Stage, the three-day Grand Finals was held at the Sunway Velocity Mall, Kuala Lumpur, with Alter Ego Ares sneaking past FaZe Clan by four points to claim the crown. The winner — who also claimed the inaugural Spring edition — took home $49.5K out of a total prize pool of $250 and the runner-up pocketed $31K, with the top six directly qualifying for the season-ending PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2023.

The PUBG Mobile Super League - Southeast Asia Fall 2023 recorded 501K Peak Viewers during Round 16 of Day 3 of the Grand Finals. This was when it seemed Alter Ego Are had finally done enough in an extremely close fight to finish first, which proved the case in the remaining two rounds.

Interestingly, while many teams finished on two Chicken Dinners each, the ninth-placed home side — SEM9 — was the only one to finish with three WWCDs. The top five table at the end was dominated by organizations from strongholds like Thailand and Indonesia, and that helped this competition register 14.4M Hours Watched and 150K Average Viewers over 97 hours of airtime.

Indonesian was also the most watched language, maintaining its dominance in the Asian market, while only one other language crossed the double-digit mark (no, it wasn't Thai). Speaking of supremacy, YouTube continued its run as the number one platform for fans to catch the action live, with TikTok continuing its steady growth to becoming a viable alternative for viewers on smartphones.

The video-sharing app's success can be seen in the fact that the official Indonesian handle was the  third most popular during this PUBG Mobile event. It must again be reiterated that it is inaccessible in many countries in the Southeast Asian region, making its continued evolution in the esports broadcasting market all the more remarkable.

Moving on to the comparisons between the all-time PUBG Mobile tournaments, the PUBG Mobile Super League - Southeast Asia Fall 2023 became the eighth-most watched one of all time. Interestingly, its stats are very similar to the first iteration — PUBG Mobile Super League Southeast Asia Spring 2023 — which did 2.5% better in terms of HW (thanks to being on air 12.5 hours longer) and lagged just 13.6% behind in terms of PV.

The second edition ended as the third-most watched and fourth-most popular event in the discipline in 2023. The leader in both respects is the PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2022, which began at the end of last year and spilled on to the first week of the current one.

That an event bringing together the best of the game's most profitable region, SEA, did almost as well as the PUBG Mobile World Invitational 2023, which brings together the best teams from across the globe, proves why the former is such an integral part of the sport's calendar and identity.

Fans from Southeast Asia will hope that one of their teams can make this fame count come the biggest competition of the year, the PMGC 2023, where 48 sides will battle it out for the ultimate glory. Chinese org Nova Esports won the first two editions before Turkish unit S2G Esports took the title to Europe, so there will be extra motivation for teams from Asia to bring the trophy back.
