Standout esports players of Q1 2025

Apr 22, 2025 4 min read

The first quarter of 2025 reminded us just how much individual talent can reshape the competitive landscape. In team-based esports, it's easy to overlook the impact of a single player, but sometimes, one transfer, one breakout performance, or one perfectly timed return to form is all it takes to turn an average squad into a championship-winning machine. Across titles like Counter-Strike, Valorant, Mobile Legends, and League of Legends, we've seen individual brilliance elevate teams to new heights. Whether it’s a fresh signing revitalizing a roster or a rising star cementing their place at the top, these players were the difference-makers of the season, and in some cases, the reason their teams even stood a chance.

Counter-Strike

There was no shortage of standout players across different esports titles in Q1, and picking the ultimate hero is no easy task. In Counter-Strike, for instance, if we were to judge purely by performance and in-game impact, Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut from Team Vitality would be the clear frontrunner.

However, we’ve chosen to spotlight Robin "ropz" Kool, the team’s newest addition, as the true game-changer of the quarter. Since joining Team Vitality, ropz has brought noticeable transformation to the team’s dynamic. He continues to deliver the same level of consistency fans came to expect during his time with FaZe and now stands as Vitality’s second key firepower. Since the start of the year, he’s helped the squad win three out of four major tournaments they’ve participated in, and with the CS2 Major coming up, they show no signs of slowing down.

Valorant

In another major tactical shooter, VALORANT, one of the most electric and impactful players of the quarter was 25-year-old Kim "Meteor" Tae-oh from T1. After earning community-wide recognition last season for his performances with Gen.G, Meteor joined T1 at the start of 2025, and he’s only turned up the heat since.

His presence has been pivotal in T1’s recent rise: he helped the team secure second place at VCT 2025: Pacific Kickoff, and then led them to victory at VALORANT Masters Bangkok 2025, where he was rightfully named MVP.

T1 has already secured a playoff spot in the Pacific league, and all eyes will be on Meteor in the upcoming decisive matches. Whether the team can lift the domestic trophy may very well depend on whether their star player can keep up his red-hot form.

Standout esports players of Q1 2025

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang

In Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, 20-year-old Filipino gold laner Grant "Kelra" Pillas continues to dominate the scene as the standout player for the reigning world champions, ONIC Philippines. The start of 2025 has been nothing short of spectacular for Kelra, who has already racked up more MVP titles than one can count.

He’s been the driving force behind ONIC’s flawless run in early-season tournaments, helping the squad secure three consecutive titles in Q1 2025 and maintain their momentum following last year’s World Championship triumph.

In the domestic MPL Philippines, the team’s form has been solid but not invincible. A playoff spot looks likely, but they’ll need to step up in the knockout rounds to lock in a place at the upcoming Mid Season Cup 2025.

League of Legends

In League of Legends, the standout individual of the quarter was undoubtedly Choi "Zeus" Woo-je, whose redemption arc could easily serve as the plot of an esports drama. After leaving T1, the 21-year-old top laner found a new home with Hanwha Life Esports, and he certainly made an impression.

Zeus was named MVP of the LCK Cup 2025, which HLE went on to win, and the team didn’t stop there. They followed up with their first-ever international title, claiming victory at First Stand. While Kim "Zeka" Geon-woo may have stolen the spotlight in the final playoff matches, Zeus was a key piece of the puzzle that secured HLE’s playoff berth in the first place.
