Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is the most popular mobile MOBA of 2020, with its tournaments attracting even more viewers than the classic esports competitions. The discipline is especially popular in Indonesia, with the team ranking being led by the local teams. Unlike other Southeast Asian countries, there were no qualifiers for the new season of the professional league in Indonesia. Instead, all the teams in high demand got there at once, and many of them have already updated their personal peak viewers records.
How were the ranking spots distributed and which regions made it to the second part of the top? Read about this in the article by Esports Charts.
RRQ Hoshi became the most popular Mobile Legends: Bang Bang team in 2020, with a total of 23M hours watched. This is not all that surprising, given that the RRQ Hoshi roster won three major tournaments in a row — MPL ID Season 5 & 6 and ONE Esports MPL Invitational. Because of this, their matches were spectated by an incredible number of viewers. Although the team came in only third at the M2 World Championship, this did not prevent it from leading the ranking.
In addition to RRQ Hoshi, the organization also has a second roster — RRQ Sena (217K hours watched). They are competing in the MLBB Development League (MDL) for beginner teams, and they are already showing their first significant successes: in the second season, they took the second spot.
When it comes to the second spot of 2020, it went to the Alter Ego with 17M hours watched. The team also has several rosters, including the female team Alter Ego Nyx, which finished second at Woman Star League Season 2.
The most popular match for the organization in 2020 was the showdown between the main roster of Alter Ego and RRQ Hoshi during the MPL ID Season 6. Their encounter attracted 1.3M peak viewers.
The third most popular team is EVOS Legends. They fell short of merely 1.3M hours watched from overtaking the second spot. The team has worsened its position at the end of 2020, and left M2 World Championship so early in 2021.
In case of EVOS Legends, their most popular match was against RRQ at MPL ID Season 6, gathering a total of 883K viewers.
The most popular Mobile Legends: Bang Bang matches in 2020
EVOS is on par with the ranking’s leaders when it comes to the number of matches. However, they still lost some ground this year in terms of their achievements, and their airtime amounted to 97 hours.
Aside from the main roster, EVOS has three more teams - EVOS SG (the Singapore-aimed roster), EVOS Lynx (the female team) and EVOS Icon (the young roster that plays in the MDL).
The fourth spot in the ranking was taken by ONIC Esports with their 14M hours watched. According to statistics, their best match was the one against RRQ Hoshi at MPL ID Season 6, amounting to 899K peak viewers – a number that eclipses even that of EVOS.
Closing our top is Bigetron Alpha with 9M hours watched over 72 hours of airtime. Their encounter with RRQ at MPL ID Season 6 was the roster’s best of 2020 – scoring 633K viewers. The organization also has a female ML:BB roster called Belletron Era, which excels in local competitions.
It is rather noteworthy that ONIC and Bigetron Alpha didn't even participate in M2, so its interesting what will happen to their 2021 results. When it comes to the second part of the top 10 ML:BB teams, it consists of Filipino teams. Note that the Philippine ONIC roster managed to enter the top, collecting a total of 8M hours watched.
The winners of M2, Bren Esports from the Philippines, are merely holding the ninth spot with 7M hours watched. They could have been ranked higher due to their M2-related success, but the competition ended in early 2021, but most of the teams ended up in the top thanks to the regional MPL leagues.
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has already gained sufficient audience in Asia, and so now it has to take over the markets of other regions – or else this will be done by its competitor LoL: Wild Rift. In 2021, we can well expect new teams in the top in case Moonton succeeds in expanding the game’s geographical presence.
