The most popular tournaments in August 2021: mobile esports on top again
The entirety of August was dedicated to the regional leagues in popular disciplines: League of Legends, ML:BB, and PUBG Mobile. In our new article, Esports Charts will tell you which events in August became the most popular and whether the viewers preferred the classic disciplines over the mobile titles.
MPL ID Season 8 for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang became the most popular event in August. The Indonesian league manages to update its records each season, and this time there was no exception – as the group stage match between RRQ Hoshi and EVOS Legends attracted 1.7M Peak Viewers. Such a result pretty much guarantees a new record being set during the finals.
The second spot is occupied by the regional Korean League of Legends league with 1.3M Peak Viewers during the final match between T1 and DWG.KIA. This is a new record for LCK, as the league has shown the best Peak Viewers result in its history.
The third spot was taken by the European LoL League, with 843 Peak Viewers spectating the match between G2 and Fnatic. Meanwhile, the fourth and fifth spots once again went to mobile esports. The Indonesian PUBG Mobile pro-league attracted 585K viewers, while the Philippine Mobile Legends league attracted 458K viewers, despite also being only in the group stage.
The most popular tournaments among the viewers of English-language broadcasts

The English-language broadcast viewers are clearly not interested in mobile esports, given that not a single ML:BB or PUBGM tournament made it into the ranking. However, they’ve shown an increased interest in the regional LoL leagues – especially in the European one (with the majority of this tournament’s audience being composed of the English-language one).
Aside of the League of Legends, the viewers also took interest in the competitions part of the Valorant Champions Tour – which is coming to an end in many regions, causing the discipline to experience an influx of viewers (with the English-language broadcast of the North American playoffs grossing a total of 260K viewers).
Call of Duty League Championship 2021 is closing the top 5 among the viewers of English-language broadcasts. Despite this year’s finals falling short of exceeding the results of 2020, the event still made it into the ranking of the most popular events in August.
The most popular tournaments among the viewers of Russian-language broadcasts

There were hardly any changes to the preferences of the audience of the Russian-language broadcasts, with the top being once again dominated by Dota 2 and CS:GO. ESL Pro League Season 14 became the most popular event due to 131K viewers being attracted by the NAVI vs. FaZe Clan match.
The second spot is occupied by another ESL tournament – this time in Dota 2. ESL One Fall attracted 109K viewers during the encounter between VP and PSG.LGD. Despite being included in the top most popular events, this event failed to set any new records and so did not exceed the previous tournaments from ESL. Read more in this article.
The third spot was taken by the show match from Russian streamer Vyacheslav “Buster” Leontyev – a CS:GO competition featuring the teams composed of professional players and the streamers. The event became a sort of Twitch Rivals counterpart for the CIS region and gathered 53K Peak Viewers.
Twitch Rivals for Call of Duty: Warzone also made it to the top thanks to the streamer Dmitry “Recrent” Osintsev. He is one of the discipline’s most popular streamers and therefore tends to attract a lot of people to the broadcast.
The most popular esports channels in August 2021

The top of the most popular esports channels was almost entirely occupied by the channels of the regional LoL leagues – but it was /lec that gathered the most viewers (380K Peak Viewers). Additionally, two LCK channels at once made it into the ranking – as one of them was responsible for the official Korean broadcast, while the other one for the official English broadcast. The fifth spot was taken by /esl_csgo with 137K Peak Viewers.
