The fourth stage of the regular part of the Overwatch main league has ended. Based on its results, we got to know the participants of the playoff stage of the second season of Overwatch League. The outcome of this phase of the competition is the main topic of today's article.
A total of 12 teams will participate in the final part of the league's second season. They will be divided into two playoff stages. But first, six participants will compete for two spots in the main playoffs. As a result, a prize pool of $3.5 million will be drawn between the eight best teams.
First of all, let's talk about the average viewers of the regular part of the Overwatch League 2019. The first stage was marked by the highest level of this indicator, with the number of people watching the respective broadcasts reaching 164 thousand.
The fourth stage has showed the smallest result. Its streams have gathered 101 thousand average viewers – suggesting that the championship kept losing public interest over time.
This is also evident based on the peak broadcast viewers. The debut stage of OWL 2019 has once again scored the highest mark, receiving 297 thousand viewers at its most popular match. This figure was obtained in the first week within the bounds of the encounter between the London Spitfire and Philadelphia Fusion.
The third stage stands out with its minimal peak viewers figure. Its result amounted to only 81 thousand people. This was achieved at the match between the Los Angeles Gladiators and Philadelphia Fusion during the second game week. The difference between these two results is impressive and amounts to a little more than 72%.
The situation repeats itself with the hours watched. The first stage was marked with the largest number of hours watched – a total of 23 million. In the second part of the season, the indicator fell by 25%, to 17 million hours. The third and fourth stages have shown even smaller digits; their decreases were equal to 37% and 43%, respectively.
This sort of downward trend was in place ever since the last season. The league's debut was losing viewers from stage to stage in almost same fashion. However, However, in 2018, the fourth stage of the Overwatch League (Inaugural Season) was still able to surpass the opening stage. Unfortunately, in the second season this feat was not repeated. If you missed the results of the Inaugural Season, you can find them on this page.
What about the teams? It is worth talking about the most popular one based on the average viewers. In this case, each stage of the competition has a winner of its own.
At the first stage, the top spot went to the guys from New York Excelsior. In the second part of the event, the title of the most popular team has passed into the hands of Seoul Dynasty. At the third stage, Guangzhou Charge became the owners of the first spot in the ranking. In turn, representatives of Vancouver Titans were holding this title at the end of the championship.
Finally, let's note one important point. Among all four stages, only the last one did not get its playoffs. As a result, smaller numbers could be observed. However, even if we remove it from the comparison, the overall picture will remain the same: with each subsequent stage, the viewer interest keeps decreasing.
