ALGS: 2024 Championship Group Stage viewership dips due to time zone
The biggest competition in the 2024 calendar for Apex Legends esports just saw its Group Stage come to an end. The ALGS: 2024 Championship, being held at the Daiwa House PREMIST DOME in Sapporo, Japan, saw its first round conclude on January 30, but the viewership was lower than at the same stage last year.
The Group Stage of the ALGS: 2024 Championship, where the strongest teams from around the world are battling for the tag of world champion, peaked at 82,643 viewers during the A vs B, Round 5 on Day 1. This was 28.14% less than the Group Stage of the 2023 iteration despite a relatively similar format for both events.
The time zone seemed to make the biggest difference, as English viewership plummeted in 2024. Its audience reach fell by as much as 72.5% when looking at the watch time comparisons to the ALGS: 2023 Championship, with even regional languages like Chinese and Japanese witnessing slight declines.
Interestingly, the changes made to the ALGS 2024 season seemed to point to Apex Legends moving the focus of its esports scene to North America. However, the conduct of its most prestigious tournament in Japan means that many matches would be held late in the night or in the early hours in many parts of the Western world, which has tempered audience interest in this part of the globe.
Moreover, the performance of prominent esports organizations like TSM, 100 Thieves, and FURIA Esports has been lukewarm. All three sides finished outside the top ten of the overall Group Stage table, although they did make it to the Winners Bracket of the Bracket Stage.
Nevertheless, most of these fan-favorite teams will have a chance to make amends when the Bracket Stage begins on February 1.
