Combo Breaker 2024 Tekken event sets viewership record for the series
Combo Breaker, a fighting games tournament, returned for its 2024 run in Schaumburg, Illinois, from May 24 to 26. The eighth edition of the series, which featured more than 24 main events, also conducted various community events over the weekend.
Among the more prominent gaming titles seen in action, it was the ever-improving Tekken 8 competition that shone. It was the series' most successful entry by watch time and peak concurrent viewership, ending a five-year run for the previous event in the top spot, Combo Breaker 2019 for Mortal Kombat.
The Combo Breaker 2024 T8 ended with 1.1M Hours Watched and 33.7K Average Viewers over 33 hours of airtime. The former is a record figure for the series, doing 28.2% better than the previous record holder, with almost three extra hours of on-air time playing a part in this rise.
The 103K Peak Viewers this Tekken 8 competition did was also a milestone, beating the incumbent by almost 35%. It hit this mark during the Grand Finals between AK and ArslanAsh, with the former edging a tightly fought affair 3:2 after coming back twice during this best-of-five match.
Out of the total prize purse of $22,330 that was on offer, the tournament winner took home $9,378 while the runner-up became richer by $5,359. Pakistan had two players on the podium as Farzeen finished third to pocket $3,126.
One big reason for the kind of audience reach this Tekken 8 competition enjoyed was the caliber of content creators who live-streamed the action. The likes of brawlpro_, maximilian_dood, sodam소담형xiaoyu샤오유, and avoidingthepuddle all showed varied levels of interest in this event; considering their loyal fanbases in the fighting games community, these internet stars were able to attract thousands of additional viewers.
For those unaware, this tournament also contributes to the Tekken World Tour 2024, the annual esports season for the game's tournaments that Bandai Namco Entertainment officially sponsors. The current year is also the launch circuit for Tekken 8, whose hype has helped maintain the franchise's recent renaissance and give a genre that had seen dwindling fortunes recently a new lease on life.
Coming back to comparisons, the Combo Breaker 2024 T8 ended as the sixth-most popular event ever in the game. This performance comes on the back of the EVO Japan 2024 Tekken 8 Finals emerging as the most popular Tekken tournament ever held in Japan and the fifth most popular of all time.
English and Japanese audiences usually contribute higher numbers to the viewership reach of fighting game events, so the fact that this competition was held in the US was crucial. They were also the two most-watched languages, combining to total around 95.83% of the overall watch time.
Recent Tekken 8 competitions have raised the bar once again when it comes to what competitive fighting games can accomplish with respect to viewership. With three of the six most popular events in the discipline coming since 2023, and four of the top six since 2022, there is hope that Tekken 8's first full season can help establish it as one of the frontrunners in the FCG when it comes to fan following and audience reach.
