Japanese viewership reached peak at Worlds 2023 during DetonatioN FocusMe’s elimination match
The Worlds 2023 Play-In stage is slowly coming to a close, and there are now only four games remaining. Today, October the 13th, saw the Play-In stage host its first elimination matches of the brackets. A bittersweet story emerged from these matches, as Japanese viewership reached a new peak of concurrent viewers for the event, watching their compatriot team DetonatioN FocusMe get eliminated.
As the Play-In stage has progressed, viewership has generally fallen from the records set for the event on the opening day. Although viewership overall is down, certain languages and teams have been achieving higher viewership as the stakes are raised for their elimination matches. Take a look at the viewership statistics for the first day of eliminations at Worlds 2023 below.
Viewership statistics of Worlds 2023 on the 13th of October
Although Japanese viewership was strong thanks to the match between DFM and BDS, that was not the only match of the day. GAM Esports against Movistar R7 was the most popular match of the day, clocking in at over 800K peak concurrent viewers. The majority of these came from Twitch, however YouTube Live was responsible for a sizable chunk of this viewership.

GAM Esports, a Vietnamese team, battled against Movistar R7 to avoid elimination, and they managed to score a 2-0 victory and keep hopes for Vietnamese viewership alive. Although the team were fighting to stay in the event, Vietnamese viewership was not able to beat the record of 289K Peak Viewers for the event, which was set on the opening day. Nevertheless, Vietnamese was the most popular language of this day for the event, beating out English by almost 30K fans.
Japanese viewership managed to set a new PV record for Worlds 2023, as 58.6K Japanese-speaking fans tuned in concurrently to watch the match between DetonatioN FocusMe and Team BDS. DFM had a short run at Worlds, losing two matches in a row during the Play-In stage to be one of the quickest-eliminated teams at the event.
Fans of Team BDS, a majority French roster, did not seem as worried. Although BDS were competing to stay in the event, French viewership did not rise above the Peak Viewers figure of 69K achieved during the second day of the event. BDS will have to compete against CTBC Flying Oyster tomorrow, another elimination match that may see the EMEA team face an early exit from the event.
With DetonatioN FocusMe now out of the event, it will be tough for Japanese viewership at Worlds 2023 to beat the Peak Viewers record of Worlds 2022, 68.1K PV. Japanese currently ranks within the top 10 most popular languages of Worlds 2023, but will it be knocked down as the event progresses? Our PRO users will have to keep a keen eye on the tournament page for Worlds 2023 to see if it is able to maintain this spot as the event progresses.
